I heard there was an exhibition between LBSU and alums. Any one know what happened? Who played on alum side?

I went, and it was a very fun time. The alumni looked so good for a bunch of out of shape guys. They could really pound it. Below is a post I copied from the LBS site with some comentary from another fan who was there. I was very impressed with the play of Brett Hilliard. members4.boardhost.com/49erSports/================ Mens Volleyball Posted by BeachBacker on 10/21/2002, 10:32 am 66.75.116.55 Went to the exhibition volleyball match yesterday at the pyramid between our 2003 squad and our alumni VB players. It was indeed a spirited match. The 2003 squad won the games 30-26, 30-22, and 30-28. However, they decided to play a 4th game and the alumni prevailed 31-29. Seventeen alumni players as well as Coach Ray Ratelle showed up. The youngest being Nick Marbach from last years team to Andreas Koch from the class of 1988. Many recognizable names showed up AND played. Such as Bjorn Dahl, Matt Prosser, Zack Small, Jason Stimpfel, Brett Schroeder and Matt Lyles. Also playing very effectively were our 2 Olympians Brett Winslow and Brett Hilliard. These guys if they had a chance to practice together could probably win the NCAA title. I counted 21 players on our 2003 squad. Not all of them played yesterday. Check out the up coming schedule on the schools' site. It is a very good schedule.

How many people showed? You would think the SID's would do a better job of marketing or promoting these matches. When top alums who were responsible for making Long Beach what it is, you should show them the respect by making sure the public knows about these types of events. Another botched job by Long Beach athletics.

I found out about it by reading the Press Telegram. The article came out last week, plenty of time for me to put it on my calandar and plan my schedule around it. It was also promoted on the school's website. Besides a personal phone call, how else should they do it?

If it was marketed so well, how come only 200 showed? I thought vb was king at Long Beach?

The alumni game was more of a workout and a reunion party. They put it in the paper and on their site. No one said they were looking for a large crowd. They probably wouldn't have cared if any spectators had shown. For those of us who follow the program it was easy to see the information, in plenty of time to schedule and be there.

First of all, SIDs don't do promotions-that's the marketing department. Second of all, most SIDs have in season sports and don't do much for out of season "non-counting" events because they're way too busy. Please know something before you complain.
