Delano must be taking over for Dejan... anyone recall his outbursts, gestures and such? Jose Delgado was another fiery character. Every team has their "ones" but... Hawaii has a team full. Is it bad to say that I'm not at all surprised to hear of these antics?

i don't really care that delano is a warrior (my team!) or what prompted him to wave with one finger (if this is actually true, cause anonymous beachman said he didn't see it), but i've said this before: this is not acceptable behavior for a college athlete. yeah adrenaline can get to them, and yeah fans are so annoying sometimes, but in the back of their heads, they SHOULD remember that they are representing the school they play for and the state they live in. these are 18-27 (you gotta count those old players ... happens in football too) year old people. they aren't children and have to learn how to calm themselves down. take it out on the ball not the fans. these players need to act their ages and not their shoe-sizes. please!
fans are annoying and will always be. they can't change how the fans act towards them, so why not change their behavior towards the fans? that'd be real mature.
and yes SDB ... rugby is mad rugged! good for you!

You look sooooo cute in your little yellow long sleeved shirt with the sleeves partially rolled up and your cute little black and gold tie! You little cutie you? But Rugby? You know you Walter Mitty is SDB?

i agree that it is embarrassing for any athlete to be flipping anyone off during a match. they have to remember that they are representing the school and state even if they don't want to be. i hope one of the older guys talks to delano about that. you have to figure though, that some people have shorter fuses and you can't be surprised if you heckle someone and they decide to do something back to you. i wouldn't be surprised if someone got upset at me for heckling them.
as for tomorrow, i hope our team brings the same intensity otherwise we could get smashed like we did at irvine. i know that lbsu will really want to win after the loss on wednesday.

first of all he didnt flip off the whole croud, it was just one guy. Second the heckeling wasnt just your ordinary heckeling. The remarks that were made to Thomas were mean and uneccessary, and what he said was much worse than a finger... so get over it...

Boy, it seems that the Long Beach vs Hawaii rivalry is getting stronger. Sorry I wasn't at the match, but I attended Pepperdine/"Toppel-less"Stanford tonight. I'll be at the Pyramid Friday match though, and looking forward to a good match up.
It's a shame that a player would give the fans "the finger," because it is truly a "low class" thing to do. When the crowd gets on a player, that's part of the game. It makes the match more interesting...and many times creates a funny competition between fans vs players.
The BYU crowd is one of the "rowdiest" fans around, and has a reputation for heckling the visiting players...and they do it very religiously too! (sorry about the pun).
A great athlete will use the heckling and badgering to play harder to win...because that's the ultimate "payback" to quiet an unruly crowd. When Pep swept BYU both matches last year, I was amazed how quiet the BYU fans were when they were thoroughly beaten by the "gentlemen of Pepperdine."
UH Delano Thomas lacks the maturity of a good player...he should be more concerned with his play rather than the heckling of the fans. Friday fans will be on his case BIG TIME...we'll see if his play prevails, or will he lower his social grace standing and resort to Neanderthal gestures? In any event, it will be very interesting and entertaining to see.
As far as flipping "half a peace sign" to anyone, it usually means when someone does it, they are just exhibiting their IQ level...and Class (all low!). Enjoy the match. Hawaii will prevail again.

Why is it good when a crowd gets on a player? To me that is just as bad as trash talking and mind games. The only thing I think it shows that tha fans don't think the team can win it on their own, so they feel the need to help their team out.
In terms of cheering it's ok. When you start talking about the extent to which some fans go to, trying to disrupt/distract players, I think it is getting out of hand. How much sense does it make to lower the level of play just so your team can win?
There should be a line drawn before things get out of hand. It getting very close to the point where people are almost (and in some arenas do) physically disrupting players by throwing things and grabbing them. Fan enjoyment is very important, but it should be because of a high level of play, not just because your team won.

There are rowdy fans all over the country and you can't really do anything about the fans if they physically aren't doing anything wrong.
It takes a real athlete to block out the crowd and just play the game. Obviously Delano had a hard time doing that last night.
And you have you can't handle all the heckling from the fans and other players you don't belong on the volleyball court in the first place. Actually playing sports, because in all sports there are trash talking, so if you can't handle it you don't belong playing sports. It's just part of the game.
Hopefully Delano can come back tonight and play with more dignity and show the fans that he is all about volleyball and the game is way more important than the fans.

I'm sorry, but I must have missed the crowd on the team roster. Any athlete that retaliates (by giving the finger for example) is an idiot, but I still think crowds in all sports have gone over board. You're at a game to watch and cheer, not to help your team win.

Yes, that is true that the crowd is there to support their team and watch their team win. But for lots of teams it is because of their home crowd support that they can pull of victories. Haven't you ever heard of the term "the seventh man" helped the home team win tonight or the "the sixth man" (for basketball). The crowd is an asset to the home team. That's why all teams play better when they are at home. But I get your point that some crowds around the country has gone over board.
But an athlete has to know how to tune the crowd out if they start to become bothered by them. If an athlete lets the crowd get to them, it is just as much of their fault as the fans because I remember from when I first starting playing sports, my coaches always told me not to worry about what the fans think and just play the game. From that time on, of course I love the feeling when the crowd cheers for you, but you can't let bad compliments by the fans get to you. You just need to be able to shake it off and continue playing.
If you can't deal with the fans you shouldn't be playing the game because the fans are part of the game.

Too bad volleyball cannot be like tennis, where during a tennis match, the crowd must be silence when the serve is ready to be played.

It's funny how Beach fans has already forgotten when on of their own players grabbed HIS GONADS in front of UCLA fans at the Beach/UCLA match. Thomas just wanted to tell the Beach fans that Hawaii was still Number One. Your Beach player was just digging for change I guess. Bruin fans won't forget what happened at Pauley.

Yes I did play Rugby last year... and yes, I am NOT a big guy by any means... I played the "WINGER" position... Kind of like a running back in football... Basically they used me for my speed... I was sort of admired by my teammates, because despite my size, I played with more intensity and heart than most out there... Every day would be one on one tackling drills with our forwards who can get up to 6'5'' 280 LBS... don't ask me how I did it, because I don't know... LOL!!! With that said, surprisingly, despite being thrown around a few times, the only think I broke was my finger from pulling someone's jersey... LOL!!! AND YES, we do get stepped on and cleated in Rugby... it's pretty bad actually... I was over it this year, so I focused my attention to ASI... And thanks for the complements on our PYRAMID POSSE outfits!!! SEE YOU TONIGHT WHOEVER YOU ARE!!! The Greeks will be in the house, so it'll be rockin! Come say hi to me! I won't bite! HEHE GO BEACH!!!
