I am sure this is in the news other places than just here in LA. This idiot decides he wants to commit suicide (in fact tried to slice his wrists and stab himself in the chest before the accident). He parks his jeep on the train tracks and then gets out of his car when he changes his mind. BUT he leaves the car on the train tracks for two MetroLink trains to hit. 10 people are dead and over 200 people are injured due to this "accident".
What an idiot! At least he has already been arrested and charged with 10 counts of homicide. He is also on a suicide watch.
I work very close to the site and shop at the Costco where they were treating people. Lots of helicopters (in fact a local news helicopter was the one to report the accident), lots of responders.
Very sad . . .

What happened last week we all assumed it was an accident but now we find out that Juan Manuel Alvarez - the suspect who left his SUV on the tracks and then bolted out at the last second stabbing himself and watching the derailment and flees into the neighborhood - was a sick man. Basically he had issues like most of us all do and he just couldn't deal with it, so he did the unthinkable and tried to kill himself along with other everyday people commuting from Ventura County and SFV to downtown L.A. I believe Alvarez is an immigrant and had no support system and he didn't know who to reach or contact for help. He probably didn't know that the county had low-fee services for counseling services...in Spanish or if there was a 1-800 suicide line also in Spanish to help him get out of his misery.
Yeah I agree with you Rocky he's an idiot and that's the first thing that came to my mind in addition to saying Alvarez is a stupid mutha f****... my thoughts and prayers goes to the family and friends that were affected by his stupid move. I was reading their stories in the L A Times and L A Daily News of how family/friends were trying to find whoever they knew and it saddened me to read their agonies of trying to locate whoever they know. Many were fortunate of good news or bad news while other had to wait another day where the results were not so good. In addition I feel bad for Alvarez - the poor bugger just couldn't cope with his situation and obviously wasn't thinking right. I don't know if he reached out to anyone for help.
As for the Costco employess - I'm impressed just simply impressed how they automatically went inside the store got fire hydrants to help douse out the fire, putting their lives on the line while train fuel is pouring onto them while they are taking out the victims, getting pallets to carry the victims, setting up tarps for coverage and serving food/beverage for the rescue team.
One thing about this calamity is that I was hoping that the media and the local residents was not going to jump the gun and say it was a possible terroist attack( not that it's any better) and that the local politicians would make an appearance which they did. I'm not surprised about that.
This is another day that some people will never forget - it's too bad it happened.
Just wondering - I always thought that part of Los Angeles was Atwater Village, another community in the city of Los Angeles(aka, L.A.) instead of Glendale. Whatever, if it's in Glendale, it is in Glendale.
