Well since this summer is the volleyball offseason, I thought I'd write about a few politicians that I've had the opportunity to meet while I was an intern on capitol hill back in my college days. It seems some of you on here are quite interested in politics so this might interest you.
John Ashcroft: I met him while he was still in the senate and not the attorney general. I ran into him on the capitol subway and had a nice five minute conversation with him. He asked who I was interning for and hoped that I was enjoying my stay in Washington. I found hime to be very friendly and a genuinely nice man. I talked to other staffers and he is one of the most well liked people in congress. Even democrats who disagree with almost all of his beliefs really like him on a personal level.
John McCain: I really don't know why America is obsessed with this guy. I ran into him in hallway and wanted to introduce myself and he just gave me this "how dare you come up and bother me" type of look. I've heard from people who worked in his office that he has a very short temper and has a difficult and abrasive personality that can rub people the wrong way. Unlike John Ashcroft, McCain is generally not well liked by his senate colleagues. I've heard more than once that this guy has a huge ego and just has to be the center of attention. For some reason he says all the right things when on television, but in person seems very cold and aloof.
Paul Wellstone: Someone who also took time out of his busy schedule to chat. I wanted to know his position on the Clinton impeachement and why he voted the way he did. He actually took the time to really explain the way he voted to me. Even though I may disagree, it meant a lot that he took the time to explain his reasoning to me. He is another person who was really well liked, in fact I can't think of anyone who didn't like him on a personal level while I was there. His staffers told me that he was someone who refused to take advantage of a lot of the perks of his office. He didn't expect any special treatment because he was a senator. I was really saddened when I found out he died in a plane crash a few years ago.
I hope some of you find this info interesting, and so you can guess I would never vote for John McCain for anything.
