Thomas, an All-America middle blocker in 2002, played outside hitter last year, leading the Warriors in kills (4.0 per game) and points (473). He returned to middle blocker during fall training camp. here's the official comments from the UH Website:
Three Players Out For UH Men's Volleyball
Release Date: 11/15/04 HONOLULU - University of Hawai`i head men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton announced today that the Warriors will be without the services of three players for the upcoming exhibition matches against the University of the Pacific later this week.
Wilton said that both Pedro Azenha, a 6-6 junior outside hitter, and Dionisio Dante, a 6-8 sophomore middle blocker, have been suspended indefinitely from the squad for breaking team rules. Also, Delano Thomas, a 6-8 senior outside hitter/middle blocker is ineligible for the fall semester. The Warriors open a four-match interisland exhibition series with Pacific, Nov. 17-20. The series will be on four different islands starting with Oahu and at the Stan Sheriff Center, Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. The two teams also play on the Big Island (Nov. 18), Molokai (Nov. 19), and Kauai (Nov. 20).

This leaves Hawaii a little short in the middle blocker position but its not a critical loss. Bender is a great opposite player and will be more than enough to fill Azenha's shoes. La Barre will hold down one middle but that second middle position is still questionable. Schkud will get some good playing time and Klinger might also see some action. All in all, some good chances for the young players to get some playing time.

So, what is the count up to now, as far as the number of times Delano Thomas has made himself ineligible (either formally or informally with Wilton) for not keeping his grades up?
And, while we're at it, how many times has Dante gotten in trouble for breaking team rules? I seem to remember he was one of those suspended last season on a road trip.
All in all, this current crop of Wilton's has to be by far the most immature dumbshiites ever.

All in all, this current crop of Wilton's has to be by far the most immature dumbshiites ever. I wouldn't have put it that way, but I do agree. Thomas had some academic trouble in his freshman year. For the most part, I find that forgivable, as manyt freshman sometimes have some trouble adjusting to college. Not completely sure what the NCAA standards are for grades but as long as the player doesn't get kicked out for low grades, I wont hold it against them. But this is the second time and he is only a junior. He still has 3 more semesters of school, and that assumes that he is on time for graduating. I am also a little disappointed in Dante and Azenha. They were both suspended last year, although it seemed like a very minor infraction. Still, they have to realize that the rules Wilton places on them must be followed. By now, you would hope that they learn that it wont be a small note in sports, but it will be part of the main news in Hawaii sports.

It suppose to be the other way around, but maybe those younger players can teach those older guys something about team ethics ....you know the part about not letting your team mates, coaches, and family down. UH was looking pretty decent. I hope this is just a bump in the road, a lump in the sand. And it doesn't disrupt things too much. At least it is early in the year....
And hopefully, things will work out for everyone involved. Good luck this weekend, Warriors.

By Stephen Tsai Advertiser Staff Writer
University of Hawai'i men's volleyball players Pedro Azenha and Dionisio Dante have been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, and Delano Thomas is ineligible for the fall semester, head coach Mike Wilton announced yesterday.
Wilton refused to disclose the reasons leading to the two suspensions.
Citing federal privacy laws, Wilton also declined to comment on Thomas' ineligibility.
But Wilton left open the possibility of Thomas rejoining the Warriors in January for the start of the 2005 season.
"He has to take care of business," Wilton said. "It's doable."
Thomas, who remains on the team, is allowed to attend classes and receive financial aid from the athletic department.
It is not known when — or if — Azenha and Dante will be allowed to rejoin the Warriors. They still are attending classes.
For sure, Azenha and Dante will not play in this week's four exhibition matches against Pacific. The Warriors are in the fourth week of fall training camp.
Last season, Thomas, Azenha, Dante and José José Delgado were suspended for two matches for violating undisclosed team rules during a road trip.
Before the incident, Thomas, Azenha and Delgado were starters. Only Thomas and Azenha worked their way back into the rotation.
Thomas, a 6-foot-8 senior from Sacramento, Calif., was named to the 2002 All-America first team as a middle blocker. He played outside hitter last season, leading the Warriors in kills (4.0 per game) and points (473).
He returned to middle blocker during fall training camp.
Thomas is the only remaining full-time starter from the UH team that defeated Pepperdine in the final match of the 2002 NCAA Championships. The NCAA later stripped the Warriors of the title for using a player with professional experience.
Azenha was named to the 2004 All-America second team as an opposite hitter.
Last season, Azenha, who is 6-6, averaged 3.92 kills per game and led the Warriors with 53 aces.
Azenha is a 1999 graduate of Logos High in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was a member of Brazil's Junior National team for three years before enrolling at UH in August 2002.
Because of his participation in an international tournament, Azenha was ineligible to play in UH's first four matches of the 2003 season.
Later, the NCAA added to the sanction, ruling he should lose a year of eligibility. Although he played only two seasons at UH, he entered this academic year as a senior.
Dante, a 6-8 middle blocker from Kula, Maui, redshirted in 2003. He emerged as a part-time starter last season, a role he was expected to have in 2005.
The Warriors will use a revised lineup for the exhibition matches against Pacific tomorrow in the Stan Sheriff Center, Thursday at UH-Hilo, Friday on Moloka'i and Saturday on Kaua'i.
First serve is at 7 p.m. for each of the matches. Tickets are priced at $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
"We've been practicing for four weeks," Wilton said. "It'll be good to play against somebody else."
Wilton said he expects to finalize a starting lineup after today's practice. For now, the Warriors will open with Daniel Rasay at setter, Matt Bender at opposite hitter, Mauli'a LaBarre and Jake Schkud in the middle, Delgado and Lauri Hakala at outside hitter, and Alfred Reft at libero.
Wilton said Matt Carere will rotate at outside hitter. Middle blocker Kyle Klinger, who is recovering from a fractured bone in his foot, recently was cleared to run.
-----
So I guess Azenha is a Senior now at UH.

it's nice that matt bender will get the start tomorrow night. he did a more than adequate job when he got to start last year. lauri hakala seems like a real good one too, his jump serve is strong and his hitting isn't bad also. not too sure about his passing.
on pedro, dio, and delano--i hoped that pedro and dio would have learned from the last time they were suspended. it's kind of embarrassing, especially since the story was one of the main sports headlines on the Advertiser website. hopefully delano can get back on track with school so that he doesn't have to sit out when the regular season starts.

I agree with you. A friend of mine was saying to me today that he wished that Wilton would just kick them off the team, since he feels giving them a third chance to obey team rules is a bit too much, since his argument is, "Who knows if whatever these rules Dante and Azenha broke, they'll do it again, but be even more sneaky about it.".

So is Pedro still on the team or not? I do believe he is still on the team, just right now facing the punishment of him breaking team rules.

I'm confused because in the first article to start this thread it says that Pedro is no longer on the team...then I hear on the news and in another newspaper article that he just got suspended...so I'm a little confused

Stupid is as stupid does...in fairness to the other players this will be the best thing for the team. You can't have guys breaking team rules and then getting chance after chance to get their spot back in the starting lineup.
Azhena has been nothing but a disappointment since his first team violation; it's too bad b/c the kid has a lot of talent. Dante hasn't done enough to get any press. I hope Thomas can find a major easy enough to get decent grades. C's aren't that hard to get, even if you don't go to class.
