The problem is that Republican and Democrat politicians alike spent the surplus on other items. If the money going into Social Security had STAYED there, there would be no crisis now or in the future.
Now something has to be done and neither party has the guts to do it.

I have no faith in any of the politicians to make sure Social Security will be there when I need it. I just keep telling myself I'm paying for my dad's and grandparents' benefits.... and sinking all the $ I can into the stock market.

Luckily nobody I know really will need to depend on Social Security, and I am certainly not planning on it being there for me when I am of age. Mostly because I expect to be living well above the means of the paltry SS checks they receive each month. It does anger me however that I am expected to pay each week into a fund that nobody I know will ever see. I would much rather toss those extra dollars of mine into a fund of my choice, that way I know it will be there for me.

Well, no, you wouldn't know it would be there for you.
What would have been nice would have been the Government INSURING it would be there for you, rather than spending it on whatever they felt like.
