Soccer fans have done a lot of pretty embarrassing things. So many in fact, that it would be almost impossible to catalogue them all in one place. But I think they may have outdone themselves this weekend in Scotland. Before a semi-final match between Hearts and Celtic, there was to be a moment of silence for the recently deceased Pope, John Paul II.
That's when Hearts fans started jeering the Celtic fans, which are mostly Catholic. Brilliant! There's nothing like starting a religious war over soccer. I can just see the fans getting ready before the game and this conversations taking place.
“You know, the Pope is dead and most of those Celtic fans are Catholic. Let’s say we clown the guy during the moment of silence!”
Brilliant!
Look, Catholic, non-Catholic, atheist, whatever, just show little respect for the guy. There's nothing wrong with showing a little respect for the faith of other people. If you want to boo the best player on the other team, fine. If you want to boo the coach for making a stupid decision, fine. But to start heckling during a moment of silence for the Pope. Even for soccer that’s pretty reprehensible.
The referee stopped the moment of silence about halfway through because of all the noise. The Chief Executive of the Hearts team apologized to the Celtic fans and the Scottish Football Association. That’s a good start, but how about apologizing to everyone in the world that isn’t an a-hole? I think that should be the next logical step in your round of apologies. Soccer rules!

Euro soccer fans are as creepy as South Americans. Not to mention the ridiculous Mexicans chanting "OSAMA!" while playing USA. When I heard that, I said, "Fine. You do that. Just keep washing dishes and cooking food in the restaurants I frequent." ;D
