This is soccer week for me.
On Wednesday I took up on the comp ticket I was offered to watch Mia, Julie and Joy play their last game as members of the U.S. soccer team at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Julie and Mia are one of my favorite athletes(especially Mia - maybe it's because we have the same numbers on our jerseys) to watch and I'm glad I got to see them in several exhibition games. I am not match of a soccer fan but just watching these two play was fasinating and amazing on the field and off the field as well. They managed to bring women's soccer to the front pages of the sports section, gain attention on tv talk shows and most of all they were very classy athletes. These players have done a terrific job being representatives for team USA and promoting women's soccer in the U.S. I'll miss them and I'm looking forward to seeing how the new players will do.
On the men's side, I didn't expect UCSB to be in the finals of the College Cup. Great job Gauchos.
I watched both semifinals(Indiana vs Maryland - that was a great game) but the game between UCSB vs Duke was fun to watch. It was a lopsided win for the Gauchos which was fine by me(I like high scoring games in soccer) because it was good to see a Big West/local team winning and reaching a final which no Big West men's team has done before.
Turn out was okay, glad the UCSB students drove down to watch their Gauchos win otherwise attendance would be low. As always there wasn't much promotion by UCLA(the host school)on the Men's College Cup(it will be the same for the Final Four for women's volleyball next week in Long Beach) - barely any ads/articles for the games in the local papers, no interviews on local TV or radio. I heard about it and wasn't planning on going, but again I received comp tickets and I wasn't going to turn it down(would you?).
If any of you in the L.A./southland aren't tied-up with holiday shopping, Christmas cards or NFL games come on out to Home Depot Center(it's a really nice venue for soccer) and cheer UCSB to victory. The weather will be nice - in the mid 70s(f)/22(c).
Good luck UCSB
