This is the general sports forum so the topics don't need to be volleyball related.

Isn't soccer the most popular sport in the world?
NASCAR is the most popular sport professional sport in the US behind NFL football. Throwing in all professional auto racing attended in the US might even push it past the NFL for total attendance.
Is watching (R)uffda! chase after his kids considered an official spectator sport?

men's water polo I tried playing that once, but the horse I had couldn't swim. Made things kinda tough, had to stop every 2 minutes to drag the horse outa the pool and administer CPR.

men's water polo You sly one, PG. I bet you don't even watch the game! (I was going to say watch the "ball", but I knew someone would take it the wrong way)

There is a particular sport I obsessed over as a teenager. I don't see that listed.

Hmmm..
Who'da thunk there was a game, with rules and all that sort of stuff, being played while you were watching.

Yeah, yeah. The "game" part. Much of the action takes place UNDER the water. Kind of makes the NBA look like a non-contact sport.

Do they have seating where you can watch the underwater parts of the game through windows?
Is there women's water polo?

>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=sports&thread=1089852164&start=3#0 date=1089863384]Isn't soccer the most popular sport in the world? NASCAR is the most popular sport professional sport in the US behind NFL football. Throwing in all professional auto racing attended in the US might even push it past the NFL for total attendance. BTW, this is the biggest nonsense being spouted today. I'd like to know what criteria you use to conclude that NASCAR is the "most popular professional sport." Even if you include the Busch series, NASCAR comes no where close to other sports. NASCAR has, what, 30 week season? OK, NASCAR runs on big venues, that may hold up to 500K. OTOH, they also run in small places. Let's say they average 250K a week. That means in 30 weeks, they get 7.5 million fans. Throw in a Busch series race, which we conservatively put at 100K week, and they are up to 10.5 million fans. That's the total attendance for 5 average MLB baseball teams. Out of 30. So NASCAR attendance, if you include their minor leagues and are generous, is less than 20% of that for MLB. That's without adding minor league baseball, or "semi-pro" or "town team." Moreover, there isn't such a thing as "amateur" racing (local dirt tracks are still "professional", but baseball has legion ball, high school, college, and little league. NASCAR attendance might pass up the NFL, which is 60K stadia with 8 home games, but that's nowhere close to baseball. Of course, at least back in the 80s the claim was that baseball wasn't even the most attended sport, which was horse racing. I don't know if that is still true. The claim that NASCAR "is the most popular professional sport" is really hard to support. You might want to rely on opinion polls, but it's hard to take opinion polls over the poll that really matters, the one where people watch it. As for total attendance, NASCAR isn't even close to at least baseball, with possibilities of others.

You're forgetting that NASCAR isn't JUST about the races.
For each of the races they also have huge attendance for the time trials and other events taking place for pretty much the entire week before the race.
You leave out the various NASCAR truck series races as well.
