Men's Volleyball Opens with a 3-1 Victory over St. Francis (Pa.)
Buckeye Mark Greaves has a match-high 19 points in the win.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (1-0 overall) men's volleyball team opened the 2005 season with a 3-1 (24-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-21) victory against St. Francis (Pa.) (0-2) Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. OSU's Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a match-high 19 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 18 kills and an ace serve. Marc Honore had a team-high 13.5 points with 10 kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks for St. Francis..
Tied at 18 in game one, two Red Flash errors and an OSU block by Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) and Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) opened a 20-18 Buckeye lead. At 21-19, OSU, kills by Honore and Jim Fazzini and two OSU errors put St. Francis ahead, 23-21. The Buckeyes closed to within one at 24-23 but the Red Storm, with kills by Brandon Kelly and Brent Way and a Way ace serve put St. Francis ahead, 27-24. A Red Flash error cut the lead to 27-24 but a Way kill and a block by Way and Kelly set game point (28-24) where Kelly's kill ended game at 30-24. St. Francis hit .314 for the game to .179 for OSU.
Game two was tied at 17 when the Buckeyes scored six consecutive points to open a 23-17 lead. The run began with a Graves kill and an ace serve from Mathews. Two Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kills, a St. Francis error and another ace from Mathews completed the run. With OSU leading 27-21, a Cole kill, a block by Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Mathews and a Red Flash error ended the game at 30-21. The Buckeyes hit .444 for the game to .204 for the Red Flash.
St. Francis held an early 7-2 lead in game three. With the Red Flash leading, 13-8, Ohio State ran off seven points to take a 15-13 lead. The run included four kills from Greaves an ace serve by Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and two St. Francis errors. The Red Storm, with a Kelly kill, tied the game at 19. With OSU leading 23-22, kills by Greaves and Mathews and a Dreven-Mathews-Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) block gave OSU a 26-23 lead. Two kills by Travis Fox cut the lead to 26-25. A Dreven kill and blocks by Mathews and Spurlock and Mathews, Spurlock and Stevens set game point at 29-25. St. Francis responded with kills from Christian Hartnett and Fox and with a Buckeye error closed to 29-28. A Fox service error ended the game at 30-28, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .344 for the game to .256 for the Red Storm.
With the Buckeyes leading, 7-6, in game four, OSU had a five-point run to open a 12-6 lead. The run began with two kills from Spurlock, an ace from Mathews, a block from Spurlock and Cole and a Wauligman kill. St. Francis could only cut the lead to five at 24-19 before Mathew's kill ended the game at 30-21. Ohio State hit .406 for the game to .000 for the Red Storm.
For the match, Ohio State hit .345 to .205 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 60-59 margin in kills and a nine to three edge in aces. OSU gave up 15 service errors to 13 for the Red Storm. Defensively, Ohio State had a 42-29 margin in digs with David Woodward of St. Francis recording a match-high 13. At the net, OSU had a 17.5 to six advantage in team blocks. Buckeyes Mathews and Dreven each recorded career-highs of 11 assist blocks. Mathews had 44 assists in the match to 46 for Josh Springer of St. Francis.
Ohio State continues at home next Friday, Jan. 14 when they host Juniata at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
