No. 11 Men's Volleyball Falls To Findlay, 27-30, 19-30, 26-30

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (5-1 overall) men's volleyball team dropped an 0-3 (27-30, 19-30, 26-30) decision to the Findlay Oilers (5-2) Sunday afternoon at Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. The match was played at Elder, the high school of OSU's Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) to help promote volleyball in the state of Ohio. Wauligman had a team-high 13.5 points for the Buckeyes in his homecoming with a team-high 11 kills (.474), an ace serve and three assist blocks. Findlay's C.J. Macias scored a match-high 17 points in the match with a match-high 16 kills (.357) and a solo block. Oiler Jim Dziczkowski added 15 points for Findlay with 14 kills (.435) and an ace serve.
Findlay opened game one with a David Franklin kill and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. An Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) kill was followed by Franklin score to make it 3-1. Wauligman's kill cut the lead to 3-2 but a Macias kill and an OSU error made it 5-2. Kills by Wauligman and Macias made it 6-3. OSU made it 6-4 with a Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) kill but a Findlay kill from Josh Enlow and a Buckeye error made it 8-4. A Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) kill was followed with a Jim Dziczkowski kill and an Oiler service error to make the Findlay lead, 9-6. An Enlow kill and a solo block by Macias opened an 11-6 Findlay lead. An Oiler error and a block by Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) and Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) cut the lead to 11-8. Kills by Findlay's Corey Oliver and OSU's Greaves made it 12-9. Two Oiler errors cut their lead to 12-11. A Cole kill and two OSU errors made it 14-12 Findlay. An Oiler error, a Dziczkowski kill and a Greaves kill moved the score to 15-14, Oilers. Mathews ace serve tied the game at 15 and Wauligman's kill gave OSU a 16-15 lead as Findlay called time out. OSU went ahead by two, 17-15, on an Oiler error. Kills by Franklin and Cole made it 18-16, OSU. A Dziczkowski kill and an Oiler error moved the score to 19-17. Franklin and Greaves, with kills, made it 21-18. A Macias kill and a Findlay error made it 22-19. A Buckeye error and two kills from Dziczkowski tied the game at 22. Service errors by both team moved the score to 23-all. A Findlay error put OSU ahead, 24-23, but two kills by Franklin gave Findlay a 25-24 lead. A Spurlock kill tied the game at 25. Findlay hit .391 for the match to .197 for the Buckeyes. The Oilers had a 53-34 margin in kills and a four to three advantage in ace serves. Findlay gave up 15 service errors to 10 for Ohio State. Defensively, the Oilers had a 19-15 edge in digs with OSU's Mathews and Oiler Dan Plotts recording a match-high five each. At the net, Findlay edged Ohio State, six to five in team blocks. OSU's Dreven recorded a match-high five assist blocks in the match. Findlay's Keen served up a match-high 44 assists while OSU's Mathews had 28.
Ohio State hit the road next week with matches at St. Francis (Pa.) and Penn State. OSU plays St. Francis Friday, Jan. 28, 7 p.m., and faces seventh-ranked Penn State Saturday, Jan. 29 in a match that will be carried by CSTV at 7 p.m.
