Here are some frequently asked questions on registration:
1. What usernames are allowed or prohibited?
Anything under the sun is allowed with THREE exceptions: (1) if your username contains a censored word, the server will automatically replace it with a pre-programmed uncensored word; (2) misrepresentation of your identity; and (3) selection of a username that is intended to make fun of another user. What does that mean? To illustrate, here's one example. I don't want anyone to post as a Volleyball Magazine editor IF you are NOT a Volleyball Magazine editor you are alleging to be. This is just an example. I'm sure you could think of other misrepresentation examples. I only care about the SERIOUS misrepresentation cases. Also, if a user is named "Tommy," I will prohibit future registration of names that is intended to make fun of "Tommy" such as "FUTommy" or "BadTommy," just to use two examples.
2. Will this board ever become a members-only type board? In other words, will the admin ever prevent unregistered users from posting on this forum?
I haven't decided yet. I'm leaning toward leaving it as is to let everyone post, regardless of registration. You should, however, realize that you get so many benefits from registering. Update: As of late May 2003, the board is a members-only board. Registration is free.
3. What are the benefits of registration?
Well, I knew you would ask this question. So so many benefits, none of which have anything to do with making or saving money. Some of the many obvious benefits are: (1) IM capabilities, which I promise you will love, (2) viewing a list of members, (3) notification when someone replies to your post, (4) prevention of others from using your username, (5) creating a poll, (6) casting votes in other posters' polls, and so much more! I can't name them all.
4. How do I register? Are there any quirks with registration?
Follow these steps:
(1) click on the "Register" icon.
(2) enter your desired username and valid email address.
(3) be sure to check "hide email from public" if you want to keep your email address invisible.
(4) Read the Terms and Conditions, and if you agree, click on "I agree" and press the "Register" button.
(5) Go check your email. You should have an email from Volley Talk with your temporary password.
(6) Go back to Volley Talk and log in with your username and the temporary password.
(7) When you are logged in (and you should be logged in at this point), click on "Profile" at the top and change your password to something you are more comfortable with instead of the very cold temporary one(ex. "ddftyqqptoef"). Change any other settings as you desire. Save your settings.
(8) Here's where it may be tricky for some of you. You may now have to re-log back in with your username and NEW password.
NOTE: I will constantly update this FAQ post as the need arises. If you post in this FAQ board, I may elect to delete them as I incorporate your good questions into my FAQ post.
