Okay my rage on this eavesdrop thing got me blinded. I know some one as a victim from this. Sorry for being rude. Hey, no problem friend. I enjoy reading your posts here. I may not have been as clear as I should have been. I was trying to make a satirical point that in some ways the USA could teach China how to BETTER manipulate their population. I wasn't saying this was a good thing, just making an observation. To use an analogy: The government is a farmer who wants some bags of rice moved across the farm, and the people are the mule he needs to do the work for him. Sometimes the farmer gets the mule to go in the desired direction by dangling a carrot in front of its nose. Sometimes the farmer gets the mule to go in the desired direction by beating its hindquarters with a stick. Historically, the PRC has used the stick of arrest, imprisonment, military action, etc., to get the people to bend to its will. When things get really bad, send in the tanks. The USA tends to use the carrot of endless entertainment and media distraction, perceived moral superiority, manifest destiny, counterrevolutionary operations, etc. to get its people to go in the "right" direction. The tanks don't roll in and crush people, they just send a bunch of CIA/FBI/NSA undercover psych ops guys to infiltrate the organization and destabilize it before the big protest even turns into a riot. Some have even claimed that these agents start the riots themselves in order to discredit the movement and make it unattractive to the general public. It seems to me that in the last ten years both governments have begun to understand how to use the other technique. The PRC has learned how to exploit certain aspects of capitalism in order to keep its merchant classes and educated youngsters a little more materially comfortable (and therefore less likely to cause trouble and risk losing their equity). Meanwhile, the USA has learned how to scare the crap out of people so that they go cut down the biggest stick they can find and hand it to the farmer and beg to be beaten for their own safety and convenience. But either way, when you're talking about a government, it's all sticks and carrots. Is that a little more clear?

Internet ban has been lifted....kinda, sorta. Sites that are deemed harmful to the national interest will still be banned. This includes Amnesty International. www.rte.ie/news/2008/0801/olympics.htmlOlympics internet block lifted.. sort of The International Olympic Committee and Chinese organisers BOCOG claim they have lifted all Internet restrictions for media covering the Beijing Games, but several restrictions remain. 'The issue has been solved,' vice-president Gunilla Lindberg said. 'The IOC Coordination Commission and BOCOG met last night and agreed. Internet use will be just like in any Olympics.' However, that is not the case as China will still be able to block sites it deems 'subversive or against the national interest', according to a statement by IOC Press Commission chairman Kevan Gosper. The normal level of internet censorship will continue in the rest of the country. Earlier this week, foreign media outlets complained that their reporters were unable to access certain websites, including Amnesty International, Deutsche Welle, Reporters Without Borders and the BBC's China site. Amnesty International's website posted a report on Monday that showed China's human rights violations has increased, despite promises to the IOC (read that report here). Amnesty had condemned Internet restrictions during the Games as 'betraying the Olympic values'.

Just re-read my post and noticed the last line. What does the Internet have to do with Olympic values? Al Gore invented the Internet back in the 1990's....way after the first Olympics started.
