online.wsj.com/article/SB121659379072468809.html?mod=hpp_us_pageoneI saw coverage on this on the BBC America's World Newscast last night. They interviewed Jarrod Shoemaker about the masks and sought out his opinions since he'd competed in Beijing in 2006 and 2007. Frankly, if it was my long term ehalth at stake, I would wear the silly things.

Maybe they should wear tribal face masks to intimidate the opposition, and have a secret "health mask" inside.

The USA Scoccer team had some photos of the dirty Beijing air on their blog it looked really bad worse than I ever seen in LA years ago.

Actually, as the article pointed out, Shoemaker was the highest finishing American last year and he was NOT a favorite in the event by any means. In fact, he would not have qualified otherwise because he is not considered a top-3 competitor in the triathalon (the qualification process for the triathalon is somewhat similar to our beach process except for that one event where the winner automatically qualifies).
The mask may have been the biggest reason for his being able to compete better than his American compatriots last year. I would wear it.
