I just got this via email:

Update on the condition of Mrs. Barbara Bachman and the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team
Mrs. Barbara Bachman suffered multiple lacerations and stab wounds in the attack yesterday.
After undergoing approximately eight hours of surgery yesterday afternoon and evening, she is in critical but stable condition at a Beijing hospital. Family members, including her daughter Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon and son-in-law Hugh McCutcheon, are with her.
Hugh will not be on the bench today for the U.S. Men's Volleyball Team’s opening game versus Venezuela. Assistant coach Ron Larsen will serve as interim head coach for the team.

I haven't seen any news on the investigation. Will there be one or will Chinese authorities sweep this under the rug to try to avoid the international embarrassment? Was this an attempted mugging, a random psychotic break, or were the Bachmans/McCutcheons specifically targeted, and if so, why?

This is the standard MO for a Chinese investigation. No word to the press and then a quiet report afterwwards. i am sure the US Embassy is keeping updated on the investigation, but they are not the paragon of info sharing either. It seems that this is the act of a single nutjob, but anything can happen.

Can someone enlighten me as to what it means when a hand with a thumbs down is next to a topic on this board? I would hope it doesn't mean that people don't like this topic.

Can someone enlighten me as to what it means when a hand with a thumbs down is next to a topic on this board? I would hope it doesn't mean that people don't like this topic. It usually indicates how the thread author feels about the subject. For example, the person who started this thread is expressing their sadness and anger at the "attack on the US Coach's family".
