A report just went through on MSNBC's coverage that a lone attacker stabbed two family members of an indoor US Men's coach and a Chinese tour guide. One family member is dead and another is severely injured. Th attacker then committed suicide. My condolences to the Coach's family.

My heart is deeply saddened by this as I'm sure for everyone else-- especially since there are a good portion of us who have very close ties to the USA Men's NT coaching staff. My condolences and prayers go out to everyone affected by this very evil experience. More info found at: tvnz.co.nz/view/page/410965/1993155

I've been on a high for two weeks from the World League results.
I sat in awe of the Opening Ceremonies last night and got genuinely excited.
I know Coach McCutcheon, but it would be too big a leap to count him as a friend.
And, like everyone else, the news makes me feel terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Terrible.
And I'm 6683 miles away.
Then I think - not even considering if it was one of my in laws - "what if I was with the team or in Beijing or had a close friendship with the coach?"
Wow. Just when you think things are going right, they aren't. In a big way. Wow.
Perhaps it's trivial or cliche or understated or something to say something like "I hope the team can keep it going for two more weeks to numb the pain," or - guiltily - "maybe this can be a rallying point." I'll say them anyway, because, I guess, it doesn't feel quite so crappy when you find some kind of spin. In the end, though, I still feel crappy.
Prayers to Hugh and Wiz and family and friends. Prayers to the team.
(Slight edits were made when I read the identity of the victim.)

As a friend of Wiz's for a long time, I can't even begin to express my sorrow and sadness for her and her family. She is the kindest most caring person I know, has always gone out of her way to help others and am honored to be able to count her as a close friend. She has always been very close to her family and I can't imagine what they are going through. My heart and my prayers go out to her and her family and pray her mom pulls through.

We are a volleyball family from Lakeville, MN and couldn't believe the news this morning. The Bachmans are a big part of our community and the loss is heartbreaking. Our prayers go out to the family, friends, and volleyball community here in Lakeville, Minnesota, and the United States.

I'm in disbelief.
It makes sport and the Olympic Games look pretty small.

Logan Tom's reaction to the incident: "The U.S. women's indoor volleyball team heard about the killing of their former teammate's father before they took on Japan in a match Saturday. After their victory, player Logan Tom was obviously shaken. "God, we all love Wiz," she said. "It's hard to put it in words. That's not something that's supposed to happen." Tom then turned away, crying." news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080809/ap_on_re_as/oly_china_american_killed

This is terrible!!! I wonder how the team will even be able to focus enough to compete. This leaves a huge black mark on these olympics, and the olympic volleyball family. I am sure the womens and mens teams are both mourning this loss.

Hugh McCutcheon won't be coaching the men's team on their first match.
Under the circumstances, he has to be with his wife and family.
