Thanks for the link to the article! I think this is one of the most interesting article on Lang Ping.

A nicely written article. Lang Ping's view of the US volleyball culture/system vis-a-vis China is a welcomed perspective. As a frequent reader, but not a poster, of this board, I feel as though much of the criticism on the US system and the American volleyball culture is somewhat unwarranted.
If volleyball (insert anything here) were the only priority in life (e.g., Chinese volleyball players), then US is certainly behind other countries; one probably can say something similar regarding our American Football culture, especially here in Texas. If the Temple coach has problems with American athletes, then, by all means, go recruit "robots" from other countries. IMO, a lot of the foreign players come to the States to play volleyball is because they can play the sport and get an education. In short, we have choices and priorities.
Just my two pesos...

Where in the article did you find a criticism of the US system and volleyball culture?

"As a frequent reader, but not a poster..."
I was referring to many of the postings I read on this board regarding how the uncompetitive US players and system are inferior to those of others. Again, it's all about perspectives and priorities.

You think that she will head back to China??? Hopefully................ sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/2008/writers/mary_nicole_nazzaro/08/23/womens.wrapup/?eref=sircrc"After that, the U.S. women's volleyball team will return home to grapple with the loss of a member of the USA Volleyball family during these Games. Lang Ping, too, will put family first. She'll vacation with her daughter, Lydia, and says she won't coach in China again (she coached them to the Olympic silver in 1996) because China has many great coaches and Lydia is in the United States, and she wants to be closer to her."

But if China pays her a couple of millions a year, she may consider. Who knows.

I think it would take more than a couple million dollars to attract her considering the amount of time China would demand her to be training players in China. After China finishing with bronze, anything less than that would be unacceptable for a Lang Ping coached team and that translates into major national pressure. After 30 years of volleyball, I'd be really surprised if she were to come back to the kind of stress China would put on her.
And to be honest, I want her to stay in the comfy United States of America where, in her own words, volleyball is not that popular.

China is transitioning to the European, or Italian model that JLP is talking about. They are organizing a pro league and the governement is removing a lot of the financial supports from the national feeder system that used to feed into the national team. The leagues will have private corporate sponsorship. It will be interesting to see how this could work with a Chinese spin, i.e. rampant corruption.
