HS teams have started practicing. How about some pre-season rankings. Here are my top 5. There are too many in the next tier to rate at this point. 1. Mira Costa- Strong ball control team. Will need to replace their middles to contend. Always #1 until someone beats them. 2. Loyola- 4 Blue chip players. Two setters and two middles. Who's going to pass? 3. Esperanza- Defending Div-1 champs return just about everyone, including player of the year. Benefited from a week division. 4. San Clemente- A sleeper with most players back from league title team last year. No superstars but solid club players at every position. 5. Fountain Valley- Solid young team last year. If they can find a setter and let Hagstrom hit they will contend. OTHERS: In no particular order; La Costa, Corona Del Mar, Edison, Huntington Beach, Woodbridge, Santa Margarita, Bosco. Who else?

Well lets see. La Costa Canyon beat MC, so I guess they're off the thrown. I'd put Loyola #1 until someone can knock them off.

I see Loyola as the team to beat at this point in time....the poster said it simply...4 blue chippers....at the high school level(not club) that is enough. Look who Costa had at outside hitter last year and won the CIF title.

Loyola is the logical choice on paper. I just have reservations about their seniors. Their middles are not Niapali and Aufeldt, and Beckwith is no Gio. Both Costa and Loyola are deep and talented but they are both beatable this year. I say make Loyola earn the#1 rating, even on paper. There are a few OC teams who can challenge, but I don't know San Diego. Is La Costa still the class of that county?

Is he? What has he won? At LAAC he set for the most talented team in 16's and 17's and could do no better than equal 5th both years. Last year his team lost in the quarters to a Balboa team that had maybe one player that could have started for LAAC. His team had at least 3 youth national team players. Makes you wonder. Gio won national championships in club (2 in 18's) and HS. Give me Killian over Beckwith anyday. At least he's won something. By the way check out the LATimes today for their preseason rankings. Not only do you get a picture of Beckwith for your wall, but Loyola has been annointed the chosen team. Wow, five national team members. 5 players over 6'3". Costa doesn't stand a chance, and the rest of you fogetaboutit.

No one deserves more respect in this game, or from this crowd than Gio Altamura. He has earned your respect the hard way, over and over and over. He has answered all the pundits over and over. He has come through with physical skill and intangible heart to put all comers into the loser's bracket. Besides the TWO 18 J.O.s. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, the TWO HS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, and the indisputable legacy he has left behind that everyone who ever picked up a volleyball could only dream to aspire, he was 18s MVP! Go find something else to prop up your boy with.

I couldn't find the previous years, but here's last year's article on it. Buddy, take your problems out on your dog. or give Dr. Phil a call. www.nctimes.net/news/2002/20020712/55546.html
