Politics don't have anything to do with Rooney probably getting POY. He is the reason Pepperdine is where they are this year ,without Rooney ,they are not the top team in the conference. Sean has worked hard after having sugery this summer and absolutely deserves POY if he gets it . Winder has also made Pepperdine better this year, ROY probably , too. IMO

Does this mean next year without Rooney Pepp will drop to a mid-tier team? I've never seen his backup play. Who else is graduating from Pepp.

Who else is graduating from Pepp. The former setter and current Opposite John Mayer and the libero James Ka are the only other seniors on the team... actually i don't think Pepp even has any seniors on the bench.

rooney gets 20 kills a match and his team is 20-2, how can he be more dominant?

"How can he be more dominant" Crush some balls, demoralize the other team.

"How can he be more dominant" Crush some balls, demoralize the other team. I feel a liittle like a schmuck for whining about Rooney not being more interesting, especially since Pepp IS doing well and I sure as hell can't do what he's doing, BUT nonetheless, I feel that a dominant player should strike FEAR in the hearts of opponants.. Rooney doesn't do that by himself.

dineykin of russia didnt strike fear in anyone. but he didnt have to. Ya he didnt crush any balls, but he was so long and was hitting from such a high spot that it didnt matter. Ya a 6'4 guy who jumps 42 inches and and crushes the ball and grunts everytime he hits wows the crowd, but a taller guy doesn t have to. It may not look like their hitting hard, but really all that length and extension in their swings is tough to stop.
and back to the dominance subject, he has like 500 kills every year since he was a freshman.
I no what ur talking about tho, he isnt as exciting to watch as some of the other guys.

Puwave hit it.
I never said he was awesome, I was just saying in my opinion he could be better if he was more demoralizing, if he could fire up his team. They played pretty unemotionally when I saw them but hey, whatever wins for them.

You can change fundmentals but you can't change who a person is. Obviously the way Rooney is works for him. The guys he plays with aren't exactly firecrackers either. Sometimes steady and calm is what gets it done, and we shouldn't be judging someone who puts up numbers that we all DREAM about being able to. His consistency is remarkable too whereas Patak every once in a while just disappears in matches.

While slow and steady might win the race, that attitude these last couple years at Pepperdine has only gotten them to the Final Four (at best)... Had they won the championship any of those four years (98, 00, 01, 03) I think I would be more at ease with the laid-back look to Pepp... Malibu must rub off on these guys... damn

Remember in two of those years they were beaten by teams that were eventually disqualified .

Remember in two of those years they were beaten by teams that were eventually disqualified . Yup, but they were still beat. Don't get me wrong, I like Marv alot, but he still thinks it's 1988 and he's coaching the USA Men in Seoul. Same philosophy, some upgrade on the tactics to fit the modern game, same gameplans, same charting. Rooney may win POY this year, I don't see anyone better. But to anyone who's followed the men's game for the past 10-15 years or so, it's readily apparent that the overall talent level and competition has gone way down. And if you don't think POY voting is political, better think again. How else do you think voting members for AVCA POY are going to make decisions on who to vote for when some of them never even see these candidates play at all during the season? They are gonna call up their contacts in the coaching fraternity and get their $.02. Unlike the yahoos on this board, most informed coaches aren't gonna base their decisions solely on the fact that Player A had 4.6673452 kpg and 1.11468563 bpg versus Player B who had 4.6673451 kpg and 1.11468565 bpg.

Remember in two of those years they were beaten by teams that were eventually disqualified . Yeah, THAT was fun. Sonof said: "Unlike the yahoos on this board, most informed coaches aren't gonna base their decisions solely on the fact that Player A had 4.6673452 kpg and 1.11468563 bpg versus Player B who had 4.6673451 kpg and 1.11468565 bpg." First of all, I appreciate the "yahoo" label... I can see that sticking. Secondly, why the heck WOULDN'T you take a player's stats into serious consideration when selecting the Player of the Year?? Maybe Men's Volleyball is different, but in any other sport you play, a POY award is given to someone who.... PLAYS the GAME well... (yes, it's quite a concept). Obviously the discrepancy between the leagues makes for some padded stats outside the MPSF, but that is taken into account...
