No. 11 Men's Volleyball Ralies from match point for a 3-2 come-from-behind win over IPFW
Buckeye bench combine for 36 points in come back win over Mastodons.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (21-2-7 overall, 14-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team, produced 36 points off the bench to come back from an 0-2 IPFW (11-16, 8-8) match point lead to win a 3-2 (28-30, 29-31, 31-29, 30-18, 15-11) victory over the Mastodons Saturday night in the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. OSU's Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a team-high 28.5 points on 26 kills and five block assists. Sam Stevens (Jr., Miami, Fla.) contributed 16.5 points off the bench and Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) added 12. Stevens had 13 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and three assists while Cole had 11 kills and two assist blocks. IPFW's Matt Zbyszewski scored a match-high 32.5 points with 30 kills and five assist blocks. Serdar Sikca added 17 points with 13 kills, a solo block and six assist blocks for the Mastodons.
Game one saw the lead go to IPFW on two OSU errors to take a 5-3 lead. The Mastodons would take the lead to as many as five before a Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill tied the game at 23. The teams exchanged points to a 27-all tie. Two Buckeye errors gave IPFW a 29-27 lead and serving game point. Andy Cole's kill made it 29-28 but a Zbyszewski kill ended the game at 30-28, IPFW. The Mastodons hit .324 for the game to .250 for OSU.
Game two remained close with neither team having more than a two point lead. At 24-all, an ace serve by Brock Ullrick gave IPFW a 25-24 lead. OSU took the lead at 26-25 with a Sam Stevens kill and an IPFW error. Zbyszewski tied the game at 26 for IPFW. A Brett Versen (So., Centerville, Ohio) kill made it 27-26, OSU. A Zbyszewski kill and an OSU error made it 28-27, IPFW. Greaves tied the game at 28. Zbyszewski and Cole exchanged kills to go to 29-all. Zbyszewski's kill and an OSU error ended the game, 31-29 for IPW. The Mastodons hit .289 for the game to .278 for Ohio State.
Game three saw IPFW open a seven-point lead at 18-11. Ohio Sate started a come back with a 10-1 run. Two kills from Greaves and an IPFW error cut the lead to 18-14. A Zbyszewski kill made it 19-14. A Stevens' kill, two IPFW attack errors and two back-to-back blocks by Stevens and Versen tied the game at 19. The Buckeyes took the lead on a kill from Greaves at 20-21 and with a Dan Meske (So., Willow Springs, Ill.) ace serve held a 21-19 margin. The Buckeyes took the lead to three at 25-22 before a Zbyszewski kill and two Buckeye errors tied the game at 25. An OSU error gave the Mastodons a 26-25 lead. Greaves tied the game at 26 with a kill. Zbyszewski gave IPFW a 27-26 lead with a kill. Greaves responded with a kill to tie the game at 27. OSU regained the lead at 28-27, with an ace serve by Stevens. Zbyszewski responded again with a kill to tie the game at 28. IPFW reached match point at 29-28 with a Josh Stewart-Josh Collins block. A Stevens' kill tied the game at 29. Back-to-back setter dumps by OSU's Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) closed out the game at 31-29, Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .176 in the game to .162 for IPFW.
From a two-all tie in game four, an OSU error gave IPFW a 3-2 lead. Buckeye kills from Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and Stevens and a solo block by Stevens opened a 5-3 OSU lead. A Zbyszewski kill cut the lead to 5-4 before a Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) kill and an IPFW error gave OSU a 7-4 lead. After a Serdar Sikca kill for IPFW, a Katz kill and two blocks by Greaves and Versen and gave the Buckeyes a 10-5 lead. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead, closing out the game with a IPFW service error for a 30-18 win to tie the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .321 in the game to .000 for the Mastodons.
Game five opened with Ohio State taking a 2-0 lead off a Greaves kill and an IPFW error. A Zbyszewski kill cut the lead to 2-1. A Greaves kill and a Mastodon error put OSU ahead, 4-1. A Zbyszewski kill and an OSU error made it 4-3. Two kills from Greaves made it 6-3, OSU. IPFW's Mike Randolph scored a kill to make it 6-4. A dump kill by Mathews and a kill from Spurlock opened an 8-4 Buckeye lead. Errors by both squads moved the score to 9-5. A Buckeye block by Versen and Mathews gave OSU a 10-5 lead as IPFW called time out. An OSU error and two blocks from Zbyszewski and Josh Stewart cut the lead to 10-8. Back-to-back kills from OSU's Katz and a Mastodon error gave Ohio State a 13-8 lead. A Zbyszewski kill cut the margin to four at 13-9. A Katz kill made it 14-9 with the Buckeyes serving match point. Zbyszewski responded with a kill to make it 14-10 and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to 14-11. Katz closed out the match with a kill for a 15-11 game five victory, winning the match, 3-2. The Buckeyes posted a .438 hitting percentage in game five to IPFW's .105.
Ohio State hit .268 for the match to .191 for the Mastodons. The Buckeyes had a 79-60 advantage in kill while the Mastodons edged OSU, four to three in ace serves. IPFW gave up 13 service errors to 11 for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 58-28 margin in digs with Greaves and Conor Martin (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) sharing match-high honors with 11 each. The Buckeyes produced a 17 to 14.5 margin in team blocks in the match. OSU's Spurlock had a match-high nine total blocks with a solo and eight assists. OSU's Mathews recorded 66 assists in the match to Randolph's 52 for the Mastodons.
Ohio State will open play in the MIVA Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host seventh-seed Quincy () Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
