Penn State is next year, then I'm sure they will move it back out west after that...probably somewhere like the pyramid

The NCAA loves the Pyramid.....sold out each time, even without LBS in it, and the facility works well for the smaller crowds of the Men's Championships.....

Current schedule is at Penn State in 06, and then at Ohio State in 07. You can probably counton it being back west in 08.

I would imagine there are some criteria that must be met in order to host the tourney that somewhat limits the hosting options out there.
I would guess that as a start they would want a venue that can sit in the neighborhood of 10,000, adequate space for media/ hospitality rooms things like that. Hawaii has hosted in the past as well but I haven't been around the volleyball scene long enough to remember anyone besides LBSU, UCLA or Hawaii to have hosted out there.

why is it that the women's final four is held at a predetermined site which is not at a school? i know they play the whole collegiate tournament thing, but why is the men's tournament different in that its held at a school facility, while the women's final 4 is held at a big public stadium?

I went to the Pyramid in 2003, and I thought it was a great place to host it.
Two other FAR FETCHED possibilities: I think the Save Mart Center in Fresno would be a great place. It is a new arena, very nice. It holds about 15,000 and wouldn't be full, but it is in the middle of Cali. This isn't feasible because there is no team at FSU. It is also not close enough for the casual So Cal fan to make the trip.
If it were hosted by BYU in a year that BYU made it, there could be a potential of 20,000 people there. It would be closer to 15,000 because the championships are after the semester ends. BYU does have a huge following and people would come from all over the state of Utah to see it. You wold also have a few thousand people (LDS people and students home for the summer)drive from So Cal to see it. I was there at the UH game in 2002. It was amazing. Though the team is having a tough year this year, it has been consistenly the largest crowds I have seen in my time at BYU. If BYU didn't make it, well that puts your FF at an arena that is at least two states away from any other school that has a volleyball team. It would also be less appealing to travel there because it is Provo, UT.

The NCAA will select a host that can provide them with a good deal financially. They would want to make a profit from it. Attendance would also be a factor. You wouldn't want a Final Four with only 1,000 people watching it.

Attendance is the factor. A men's tournament at the Long Beach convention center (or whatever the name of the place that the women's was held this year) would look and feel AWFUL. But despite the women's being held off campus, LB was still the host. Men's crowds aren't that big and don't warrant the huge arenas. With Hawaii being the obvious standout.

I imagine if Long Beach makes it to the Final Four, Pauley Pavilion (is that where UCLA is holding the FF?) will be pretty packed. You tend to lose a lot when Hawaii and/or BYU aren't in it. Every time those two teams play, you always get much larger crowds, regardless of where the game is.

Yes it's at Pauley Pavilion and Pepperdine is actually closer to UCLA than Long Beach State... sure Beach is bigger, but they'll be a good contingency of orange and blue.

I haven't made it to any Pepp home games this year, but in the past few years, even for big matches, I've always been a little surprised by relatively low turnout of Pepp fans. That's because men's basketball is king there! Two years ago when they had the 1st round of the women's VB playoffs there the teams had to wait to use the gym because the Pepperdine Men's BB team was taking their sweet ass time getting out of the place....very unclassy!

That actually is surprising to me, that there'd be two consecutive years in 2006 and 2007 where the championships are not held on the West Coast (or BYU). You don't see the NCAA Frozen Four being held in California two years running, do you?
