Congrates to LBS. I would have voted for Alan as Coach of the Year this year after all the talent he lost and how he lead his team to the vast improvements they've shown in the second half. Nobody picked them to be in the MPSF finals at the beginning of the season, let alone at the half way mark.

Long Beach really played well tonight. Tyler really put on a clinic tonight but it was made easy by some great passing by Long Beach and some rather poor serving by UCSB. UCSB just never seemed to get untracked. I kept thinking that they would get it together but they never really did. Patak was absolutely NO factor at all. Maybe they just peaked too soon. Long Beach, on the other hand, seems to be peaking at just the right time. Pepperdine and LBS for sure will be two of the final Four.......

Of the four teams I saw play tonight I would have to rank them in the following order:
1) Long Beach 2) Pepperdine 3) Cal State Northridge 4) UC Santa Barbara
Pepperdine was beatable tonight and CSUN just did not get the job done. Giving credit to Dunphy and his scouting, they neutralized Nils. CSUN came close in the first two games and were leading at the end of both only to lose both. Had CSUN pulled off either of those games it could have been a completely different match. Unfortunately, they did not and the lost in four (the fourth game was really ugly). Congrats to the Waves.
Long Beach played a solid match tonight. Tyler H. did indeed put on a clinic. He had a great supporting cast and LB's passing played a big part in the win. The whole team looked relaxed and they got the job done. LB did a great job to neutralize Patak tonight as well. UCSB turned to the bench to sub out their setter and to sub out Patak at one point. Preston was trying to find some combination to work. I felt sorry for some of the subs who came in as serving specialists only to serve the ball right into the net. The UCSB / LB fans were also interesting to watch. They were very energetic. Congrats to Long Beach for a well played match tonight. Don't be surprised if they beat Pepperdine on Saturday (without Pepperdine "throwing" the match).
As far as NCAA final four predictions go - if you look for teams that are playing the best right now it would be Long Beach and Pepperdine. I would even put Northridge's play right now better than UCLA. I do not believe UCLA should be in the final four. If LB wins the MPSF on Saturday Pepperdine should receive the at large bid. If Pepperdine wins on Saturday I hope the committee considers Long Beach for the at large bid.
Again, congrats to Pepperdine and Long Beach. Good luck to both on Saturday. It should be a great match and will probably go 5 games.
Lastly, nice job this season Matadors. It was fun watching you guys play this year. You had a year of many changes, but once you guys figured out a final line-up you played well and with so much heart. I look forward to next year. Good bye and good luck to Nils Nielsen and Jeff Conover.

tonights game was pretty much a clinic put on by Long Beach State. The highest point total was 25 for UCSB! Patak was shut down, i don't remember the last time he hit that low. Congrats to the beach and i hope to see the same kind of fire against Pepp on saturday, should be a great game.

Pepperdine played as if they were going through the motions. More talent hands down but less heart. They may have won 3-1, but that is a terribly deceiving final score. Al Scates is politiking like crazy for the wild card slot. UCSB never got it going tonight and the LBSU block was impressive indeed. Tyler just makes it look too easy, I really enjoy watching him dispense his master-pieces of setting; tonight he gave us all his angles and set-ups. Pepperdine is beatable. Rooney carried them this evening.

CSUN vs. Pepp. I just thought that Pep had too much size and too much Sean Rooney over the Matadors. The Matadors gave a good fight and keep the games close. Nils was a disappointment. Pepp kepted him neutralized, and finally he was taken off the court for the rest of the match. I thought Conover did a nice job at setter. Rooney carried this team. Too many times Sean bailed their setter out, but making something out of a consistantly bad set. Rooney carries this team. That gym is horrible, low roof is brutal.
UCSB vs. Beach. Guachos were horrible. Passing was not there, and they could never set up a middle attack. Bart is too short to put up any kind of block, and the Beach took advantage of that by pounding Bart's side of net. Too many service errors. Patek hits a heavy ball, but the kid has a long way to go to become a dominant player. Not once did he hit 'line". His approach and arm swing needs alot of work. But he is a brute.
Saturday's Game. The Beach is the hot team right now, and Coach Knipe got his players focused. Give him credit. Because talent wise I don't think they are any better than UCLA, BYU or Hawaii. I think the X Factor is Tyler and Coach Knipe, and that is why they are in the Final. They deserve it. Pepp was alittle rusty for not playing for awhile, because of the bye week they earned. To beat Pepp you need to go after Rooney. Make him touch the ball everytime. Make him pass. make him dig, make him hit, make him do everything for the team. If he beats you then they deserve to win. The other players are good but not great players. Rooney make the players around him so much better.
Either way the Pepp and the Beach should go to the Final Four. Big Al have a seat, because these two teams will be playing for the championship on you home court. I know you're trying to "pull the rug under these two teams", but as they say in Hawaii 'SIT DOWN AL'
