No. 10 Men's Volleyball Advances to the MIVA Tournament Championship Match with a 3-2 (30-25, 26-30, 30-22, 19-30, 15-10) Victory Over No. 15 Ball State
Buckeyes have five student-athletes with double-figure points in the match.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Ohio State (23-7 overall) men's volleyball team posted a 3-2 (30-25, 26-30, 30-22, 19-30, 15-10) victory over No. 15 Ball State (17-15) in the first semifinal match of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Friday night in Alumni Gym on the Loyola-Chicago campus. OSU's Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) scored a team-high 22.5 points for the Buckeyes with Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) adding 16.5. Greaves recorded a team-high 18 kills (.265), three ace serves and three assist blocks against the Cardinals. Cole posted 15 kills (.333) and added three assist blocks. Ball State's Nick Meyer recorded a match-high 25.5 points for the Cardinals with a match-high 23 kills (.390) and five assist blocks. Cardinal Zoran Grabovac had 16.5 points with 11 kills (.500), two ace serves, a solo block and five assist blocks.
In game one the score remained close but at 26-25, the Buckeyes scored the next four points including a kill by Greaves and two Cole-Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) blocks to win, 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .231 in the game to Ball State's .062.
Ball State held an early three-point lead in game two, expanding the lead to six at 22-16. The Buckeyes cut the lead to one at 23-22 but Ball State opened the lead to 29-24 before an Evan Berg kill ended the game at 30-26 and tied the match at one game each. Ball State hit .262 for the game to .244 for Ohio State.
Game three saw the Buckeyes hold a three-point lead through much of the game before expanding the lead to six. Ohio State opened a 27-20 lead, going on to win the game, 30-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .385 for the game to .212 for the Cardinals.
Ball State, with a 30-19 win in game four, tied the match at two games each. The Cardinals hit .560 in the game to .233 for Ohio State.
Ohio State took an 8-5 lead in game five. The Cardinals cut the lead to two at 12-10. OSU scored the final three points to take the win, 15-10. The Buckeyes hit .357 in the game to .133 for the Cardinals.
For the match, Ohio State hit .277 to Ball State's .245. The Cardinals had a 68 to 65 advantage in kills while Ohio State had a five to three margin in ace serves with OSU's Greaves posting a season-high three aces for the Buckeyes. Ohio State gave up 17 service errors to 16 for Ball State. Defensively, the Cardinals posted 41 digs in the match to 36 for the Buckeyes. OSU's Conor Martin (Fr., Avon Lake, Ohio) recorded a career-high 15 digs in the contest. The Buckeyes had a 16.5 to 12 advantage in team blocks with Buckeye Dreven collecting a match-high nine assist blocks. OSU's Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) and Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) added seven assist blocks each. Mathews had a match-high 57 assists in the match while Ball State setter Dave Carlson collected 53.
Ohio State will face the winner of Friday's second semifinal between IPFW and ninth-ranked Loyola Saturday in the MIVA Tournament Championship match at 5 p.m. ET. The match will be carried live by CSTV. Saturday's winner will receive the MIVA automatic berth in the NCAA Championship semifinals Thursday, May 5.
