Alumni Gym was the place to be Friday night. Two great matches in an electric environment at Loyola University a few miles from Wrigley Field in Chicago. Ball State and Ohio State, the longest rival in collegiate volleyball, battled for two long fought hours before a couple passing breakdowns early in game 5 did the Cards in. The Cardinals had their starting team on the floor for the first time in well over a month, gave the Bucks all they wanted and more. In the end, OSU stepped up in game 5 and advanced.
Match 2 was a real shocker as Arnie Ball and IPFW came out on fire and stunned what appeared to be a Loyola team looking ahead to the CSTV championship match. It was a real struggle for the Ramblers until their partisan crowd finally woke the team up. From game two on, it was a tremendous battle with sensational defense by both teams. But in the end, it was the Don's Matt Z. that made the difference. The MIVA Player of the Year came up with big kill after big kills lead the boys from Ft. Wayne to one of the biggest upsets in MIVA tournament history.

The MIVA Player of the Year came up with big kill after big kills lead the boys from Ft. Wayne to one of the biggest upsets in MIVA tournament history. Actually, Matty Z. was Player of the Year last year, but he probably should have gotten the award again this year. During the regular season he had double digit kills in every match, eight 20+ kills matches, and three 30+ kills performances. It was unfortunate for him not to have solid setting, otherwise his hitting percentage would be a lot higher than sub-.300. He also averaged 2.06 in digs per game, and led the conference in points per game.

The job that he did this year was exceptional given that he had to hit off four different setters. I'm not like digger33 in thinking that the Mike's did an absolutely horrible job but to say that their setting was eratic would be an understatement. For him to put up those kinds of numbers says a lot about how good a player he really is. Hopefully he get first team AA to compensate!

I stand by my belief that they did a horrible job... not their fault... they just aren't setters... and it really DOES say something that Matty could have the numbers that he put up. I think he should have got MIVA POY votes but IPFW just didn't have a good enough record I guess...

From what I hear, Matt is extraordinary but keep in mind anyone of that level is gonna have inflated numbers on a team that is not very good on any particular year. Congrats on the upset though, its great redemption for a tough season.
