Instead of bashing the current system, why not propose a new system.
My suggestion: An at large tournament to be held over 2 or 3 days following the conference finals. All teams making it to the semi's of their conference are eligible to enter. The winner gets the at large bid.

Not a bad idea, but why even have a "conference" tourney? Take the three conference winners and then have an 8 team "at- large" tourney with the winner getting the fourth & final berth. That should end the griping. I understand the idea of conference tourneys in basketball, it's all about the almighty dollar. But let's face it, with crowds like 500 to 1000 for most of the mens tourney games, money isn't really a factor. It just seems to make the regular season irrelevant. With this system if you manage to finish 2,3 or even 4th in your conference- you have a shot at making the final four.
