AVCA Announces 2005 NCAA Division I-II Men’s Volleyball All-America Teams
COLORARO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 4, 2005) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announces its 15th annual AVCA All-America awards for men's volleyball. The awards presentation will occur at the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship Banquet at the Covel Commons' Grand Horizon Room on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles on Wednesday, May 4, 2005.
Pepperdine University, Long Beach State University and University of Hawai'i each placed two members on the AVCA Division I-II All-America First Team. Pepperdine's Sean Rooney earned his fourth AVCA All-America award, while teammates Andy Hein and Jonathan Winder joined him on the first- and second-team. LBSU's Tyler Hildebrand gained his second AVCA All-America First-Team award, while teammate Robert Tarr joined him on the first-team. Hawaii's Pedro Azenha picked up a second AVCA All-American award, while teammate Alfred Reft was tabbed to the first team with Azenha.
Penn State garnered three AVCA All-Americans as Nate Meerstein was tabbed first team, while two-time AVCA All-American Keith Kowal and Matt Proper earned second-team honors. UC Santa Barbara's Evan Patak moved up from second team to first team this year, while Cal State Northridge's Brian Waite was selected to the second team for the second straight year.
The selections were made by the AVCA Men's Volleyball All-America Committee: chairperson Joe Wortmann (Pacific); Sean Byron (Rutgers-Newark); Jeff Campbell (Cal State-Northridge); Fred Chao (George Mason); Shane Davis (Loyola-Chicago); Pete Hanson (Ohio State); Mark Pavlik (Penn State); John Speraw (UC Irvine); and Joel Walton (Ball State).
