Survival of those who read their mail?
Up to his death, Darwin was missing one key piece of evidence for his theory. He had no mechanism through which evolution would play. Many years after his death someone discovered a trunk with a bunch of Darwin's belongings. One thing in the trunk was an unopened letter from a guy named Mendel describing some experiments with pea plants...
The moral of the story is always open your mail, even if it comes from a monk. You never know what it might contain.

Darwin once famously made a list of pros and cons of marriage. In the end he did marry his first cousin Emma. But one of the things he wrote in support of marriage was that marrying is preferable to owning a dog.
Ironic that his birthday is so close to Valentines Day.
