Long Beach State was left out of the NCAA Volleyball Championships, but a couple of 49ers were still able to make part of the festivities.
Setter Tyler Hildebrand and Robert Tarr were named as AVCA first-team All-Americans on Wednesday during an awards presentation at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, where the national championship semifinals will take place tonight.
Hildebrand landed first-team honors for the second season in a row after leading the nation for the third consecutive year in assists, with 1,613 for a 14.03 assist-per-game average, which was also No. 1 in the country. The junior joined Brett Winslow, Brent Hilliard and Tom Hoff as the only other 49ers to earn multiple first-team All-America honors.
Hildebrand, who received AVCA Player of the Week recognition in early April, totaled 1,613 assists, 145 digs, 87 blocks, 22 service aces and 72 kills, and directed the Long Beach State offense to a .338 attack percentage, the fifth best in the country.
A first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection this season and the AVCA Newcomer of the Year in 2003, he has accumulated 4,980 career assists at LBSU, third all-time in program history.
Tarr, a junior outside hitter, earned first-team All-America honors for the first time after averaging 4.87 kills (overall) and 5.19 kills per game in MPSF play. His 4.87 kills per game ranked fifth in the nation.
He was selected as the MPSF Player of the Week after registering 47 kills to go along with 14 digs and seven blocks in LBSU's two wins over UCLA and UC Irvine on April 14 and 16, respectively. Tarr notched a career-high 36 kills at Stanford on Feb. 26.
Long Beach State won 13 of its last 16 matches and finished the 2005 season with a 22-10 record.
