actually... I would say World University Games this summer. I don't think the National Team has enough of a need for him to warrant keeping him off the USA WUG team. After that, who knows... I don't know what the national team training schedule is like. Do they stop in the fall and let everybody go back to pro leagues?

In Rooney's TV interview he mentioned looking forward to joining the national team and going to the Olympics. It's great to see his enthusiasm for the national program because they could use somebody with his talent and competitive fire. Hopefully he can make the leap from collegiate star to international star but that is a huge jump.
He needs to get a lot stonger to handle the rigors of the international game. He used a lot of off-speed and placement shots in college, and he used them wisely with great effect. But you have to bring the heat much more often than not in the international game or defenses will just eat it up and drill it back at you.
Compare him to Dante, from Brazil, who's close to the same height and age. Dante has a lot more international experience but he also packs tons more heat on every swing. Rooney needs to get strong enough to hit big for an entire match or tournament. He just looks so skinny right now. It will be interesting to see what national team training does for him.

Fortunately, Rooney is still very young and his game still seems a little raw. You can see there is a lot more potential in him than what college has brought out. Now being able to focus on volleyball full time, I see the potential in him. I agree that he is going to need to get a lot stronger and a lot fitter. Fortunately, Beijing is still 3 years away and by that time, he might be fit enough to make the roster. Bearing any injuries, I think he has a promising career ahead of him.

I think he'll be fine. He is very familiar with the USA Volleyball pipeline and has been involved with it since he was at least seventeen years old. In fact, I was out there working with the team (as well as the World University Games Team) during the summer of 2001 when he was brought out to train. At that time, he was just a senior in high school (although at that point he had already graduated), but even then he was being heralded as a future 'great' on the National Team. I'd say this is pretty impressive considering that he hadn't even played a single college match yet! I agree that he still needs development in order to adjust to the speed and style of international play. However, I will say that I've been impressed with his development since the time I saw him and can definitely see him helping the team in Bejiing 2008. Plus, Hugh was out there when he was (during the summer I'm talking about), so Sean is familiar with him and his style. I'm actually looking forward to his involvement with the team and might have to go out there for awhile this summer!

By the time Beijing rolls around, Rooney could be reaching his potential. He seems to be a quick study.
Any idea who might complement him on the outside? I wouldn't mind seeing a whole new group of players. Frankly, I'm tired of the Barnett/Priddy/Salmon/Gardner, etc. crew. I just can't see them taking the program any higher. Guys like Ptack, Olree, Touzinsky should give it a serious shot.
Out of the current collegians, the only one I can think of is Tarr, if he solidifies his all-around game. There just doesn't seem to be a great crop of OH's right now.

touzinsky was an OPP in college, so he d be competing against clay stanley for the opp position, and stanley is a beast. i dunno if touzinsky passes well enough to play outside.
tarr can pound the ball but at the international level, ur outsides have to be really good passers, and tarr is not. he is decent at passing, but nothing spectacular. he is not a bad passer as some people say tho. if he really forcused and worked on his passing, i could see him getting a spot on the roster. some of those guys ont there now are not that great, ie gabe gardener, etc.
i could def see rooney starting outside at the 2008 olympics. that would also hep give us a taller team.
if patak keeps improving, he might be an option for the 2008 team as well.

I remember last year, the usa men's coach said the only college player that would be ready for athens last year was sean rooney... But he didn't want to play..
