USA Boys/Men's HP National-Level Rosters are Set
Success breeds success.
Last year, the 2004 USA Boys Youth National Team won, for the first time ever, the Gold Medal at the NORCECA zonal qualification tournament for 2005 World Championships.
The 2004 USA Men’s Junior Team took the Silver Medal at their tournament, but that team also was offered, for the first time ever, a World Championships bid through the NORCECA zonal qualification process.
In response to this success, the number of athletes attending the boys/men’s USA High Performance Tryouts in 2005 increased by over 35 percent. And the level of talent, energy and competition was very high in all three High Performance age groups.
The resulting National-level rosters in each of these age groups reflect the level of talent and drive that was present at these tryouts.
Men’s Junior National Training Team
Under Head Coach John Speraw of UC Irvine and Assistant Coaches Fred Chao of George Mason University and Shane Davis of Loyola University Chicago, the Men’s Junior National Team will participate in World Championships in India, Aug. 6-14.
Coach Speraw has selected 18 athletes from seven tryouts across the country and will bring that Training Team together on July 20 at the Lake Placid, N.Y., Olympic Training Center. The squad will be trimmed down to a final travel squad of 12 athletes who will attend World Championships.
The roster for the Men's Junior National Training Team includes:
Name, Position, Hometown Daniel Alexander, MB, Arcadia, CA Fletcher Anderson, OH, Los Gatos, CA Paul Beckwith, S, Pacific Palisades, CA Theodore Brunner, MB, Ridgefield, CT Chase Budinger, OH, Encinitas, CA Michael Contee, L, Aiea, HI James Grunst, MB, Milwaukee, WI Jayson Jablonsky, OH, Yorba Linda, CA Tony Ker, L, Valencia, CA Paul Lotman, OH, Lakewood, CA Daniel Mathews, S, Milwaukee, WI Matthew McCarthy, MB, Wheaton, IL Jacob Schkud, OH/RS, Santa Monica, CA David Smith, MB, Saugus, CA Jonathan Steller, RS, Irvine, CA Matthew Webber, RS, Brentwood, CA Jake Wiens, OH, Clovis, CA Jonathan Winder, S, Irvine, CA
Boys Youth National Training Team
The Boys USA Youth Team won their Worlds qualification tournament last year. However, the 2005 Boys Youth World Championships are being held in a country for which there are stern travel warnings for U.S. Citizens, and Team USA will not be participating in those World Championships.
In recognition of this Team’s unparalleled success last year, USA Volleyball will be sending the 2005 BYNT team to a highly competitive four-nation tournament in Brazil in late July. There, the USA Youth Team will play numerous matches against the Boys Youth Teams from Brazil, Italy and Argentina – which includes two of the top three teams in the world.
Head Coach Andy Read of Long Beach State and Assistant Coaches Tino Reyes of the University of Hawai’i and Ken Shibuya of Juniata College, have selected 24 athletes who will come together in Southern California during Memorial Day weekend to participate in a second tryout. From that second tryout, Coach Read will select 12 athletes who will travel to Brazil in late July.
The roster for the Boys Youth National Training Team includes:
Name, Position, Hometown Matthew Anderson, MB, West Seneca, NY Dean Bittner, RS, Lakewood, CA Todd Chamberlain, RS, Louisville, KY Gerald Conrad, L, Libertyville, IL Jordan Du Fault, RS, Lakewood, CA Kyle Gramit, OH, Naperville, IL Maxwell Holt, MB, Cincinnati, OH Michael Hutz, S, Whitefish Bay, WI Michael Landolo, S, Orlando,FL Jordan Inafuku, L, Kunia, HI Maxwell Klineman, S, Manhattan Beach, CA Kent Kraushaar, OH, Irvine, CA Spencer McLachlin, OH, Honolulu, HI Sam Moisenco, MB, Saratoga, CA Colin Niedermeyer, OH, Lafayette, CA Tommy Pestolesi, OH, Huntington Beach, CA Cole Reinholm, OH, Camarillo, CA Brian Schneier, OH, Chesterfield, MO Kawika Shoji, S, Honolulu, HI Robby Stowell, MB, San Juan Capistrano, CA Trey Valbuena, OH, Huntington Beach, CA Brandon Williams, MB, Los Gatos, CA Cory Yoder, OH, San Clemente, CA Austin Zahn, MB, Hermosa Beach, CA

Wow they took Chase Budinger for the Junior team, not youth... pretty impressive, they must be trying to convince him to stick with the sport.

Generally, a team of 12 will consist of 2 setters, 1 libero, 4 outside hitters, 3 middles, and 2 opposite hitters. The number of outsides and opposites are generally the most flexible as they can play each other's positions. Depending on the coach and the expectations, they might take 4 middles, but no more than that.

is there a chance of them keeping 3 setters? especially if maybe the 3rd setter can do other things like if they have a good jumpserve or can hit well or something.

What Roy said about the number of players in each position is pretty much correct. My guess is that both the JNT and YNT will take 2 setters, 3 middles, 1 libero, 4-5 outside hitters, and 1-2 opposites.
What happened on the YNT last year was interesting, though. The makeup of the team was 2 setters, 3 middles, 1 libero, 5 outside hitters, and 1 opposite. During the tournament, however, the starting lineup used one of the outside hitters as the libero and one of the outsides as an opposite. I don't see that happening this year, though.
Also, I doubt that they would take an extra setter to use as a serving specialist. Instead of taking another setter, they can just use an outside as a serving specialist.

Not a bad looking roster. Pretty much agree with you except for maybe one or two questions...
OH: Who should go if Wiens and/or Budinger don't go? Budinger may need to be out due to basketball summer practices if that's what he's doing in college. That's just something I rememember from old volleytalk threads. I also heard Stellar has knee problems and may need to rehab during the summer to prepare for the UCI season or even he may be out all together for any sport. He does have a killer serve though! Can't imagine Speraw would take an injured player, even if it's his own UCI player, great server and all. Lotman could be a good choice. Don't know much about the other player, Anderson.
MB: Don't know much about Alexander. However, I thought Brunner had a great 1st year at UCSB. I tend to lean towards Brunner.
Setter: I think this is where the race will be. Winder is everyone's new favorite. Listen, he's good. No doubt about it. He's should be on the roster no matter what. That's my final answer. I think he had a lot of people around him making him look good like Rooney. Even so, he's got what it takes.
I'm torn though with Beckwith and Mathews. Here, I think more experience and strength of college schedule should prevail. Nothing against Daniel. He will get better at the college level. He's young. At the Final Four I was not impressed with Mathews compared to Winder's and Beckwith's season play. Mathews is just not quite polished enough. Whereas, with Beckwith he had a lot to deal with this season and he really pulled through. He was right up there with Hildebrand. Maybe I'm wrong and need to verify stats, but I think Beckwith had a much stronger season than Mathews. Plus I admire a player who gets cut from USAV last year, especially after a long history with USAV, and returns the following year instead of throwing in the towel and holding a grudge. I think Beckwith has something to prove in Lake Placid. It's up to him to prove he's the better, more consistent setter. This is all up to Beckwith. Bring your game to Lake Placid, Beckwith. I hope you make it happen.
Libero: Kerr for sure, tho it's good to see Contee on the list

In the middle blocker position i think Theo Brunner will definitely be selected, he had an awesome freshman year and had one of the highest hitting percentages in the country. Also, I think Lotman should possibly be selected over Weins and/or Schkud. He is a true passer, probably as good as Weins and definitely better than Schkud. He's got some height on both of those players also, which i think might be what Speraw is looking for. And isn't Weins done with UCSB? is he even playing anymore? In the Opposite postion i would probably say take Stellar, if he's not hurt and Schkud because he can also play at the opposite position. But if Stellar is hurt i would take Webber then.
