COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Pacific men's volleyball head coach Joe Wortmann has been appointed head coach of the United States indoor men's volleyball team at the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, Aug. 11-21. The appointment was approved by the United States Olympic Committee and first-year United States Men's National Team head coach Hugh McCutcheon.
Sean Byron (head coach, Rutgers-Newark) and Shawn Patchell (assistant coach, Brigham Young) will join Wortmann's staff as assistant coaches. Ken Preston (head coach, UC Santa Barbara) will serve as the head of the delegation, while Radford Nakamura (video coordinator, Hawai'i) will be the team's technical assistant.
A total of 16 athletes will be invited to train for a spot on the team's roster at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., beginning July 18. Eight current athletes with the U.S. Senior National Team are eligible to train if they are not traveling with the "A" Team.
Former Pacific setter Chris Tamas (2000-03) has been selected to travel on the "A" Team's current tour of the Pacific Northwest and San Diego. Brian Zodrow, an opposite for the Tigers from 2002-05, has been selected to train and try out for the World University Games roster.
Wortmann recently completed his 13th season with the Pacific men's volleyball program, leading the Tigers to a 12-18 overall record and a No. 13 final national ranking in 2005. A two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year, he owns a 143-201 career mark with the program. Wortmann previously coached the United States Youth National Team at the 1995 World Championships.
"I am honored and delighted to represent our country and sport at these World Games," Wortmann said.
The indoor men's volleyball competition at the 2005 World University Games will consist of 24 teams split into four six-team pools. Pool D is comprised of the United States, France, China, Belgium, Slovakia, and Lebanon.
