Almost ten years ago Vermont was the first state to enact a law that permitted civil unions, by a margin of one vote. The fact that this law was enacted by two-thirds of the legislators is one indicator of how much has changed. At that time, a dozen legislators who voted for the law lost their seats in the next election. There was a severe back lash, complete with yard signs that read, "Take Back Vermont."
This from the Huffy POST...
I do think you will find HISTORY will repeat itself.
there's more
Right after the Vermont legislature voted (100 to 49, precisely the 2/3 needed) to over-ride Governor Jim Douglas' veto this morning of a law permitting gay marriage, my daughter got a text message, "Yeah, Vermont!"
gee, first by 1 vote and 12 lost jobs ..now by exactly the number needed shows there is not overwhelming support.probably along PARTY LINES.

100 to 49 is not overwhelming support? Interesting math, Bill.

ALL DEMOCRATS ..The GAY community is picking NEW ENGLAND as their battleground.
Why? Because the region is liberal democrat and less likely to go to CHURCH or have church influencing voters.
Thus my thread title has merit.

My guess is that the "gay community" (as opposed to the "straight community", whatever that is) is fighting this battle throughout the USA. It's just that in large parts of the Northeast the region is more CONSERVATIVE in that they think the State should be letting people enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Contrast that with the essence of liberalism, which consists of the idea that if only the big ol' government can make better rules and regulations, it will somehow perfect the moral character of the people. Those are the pro-DOMA people.

O and U ..
Dont guess.
RESEARCH.
The gay community has selected the NE because they don't attend church as much...polls suggest religion or worship means less here.
Out of the 50 states ..40 or more ALREADY HAVE RULES DEFINING MARRIAGE..The NE doers not.

They have more success in the NE because the NE is, thank God, more conservative on this issue -- that is, they don't seem to believe in a nanny government interfering with such a private personal freedom. Unlike the christianist libs in much of the rest of the country, who are counting on government regulation to perfect the moral character of the citizen.

Wrong ..the gay community is fighting only in states where IT thinks it may win...
Doing a little research..
7 Republicans crossed over ...TOAST next election cycle.
A few Democrats crossed over....
But it wasn't until YOUNG...a FRESHMAN DEMOCRAT and a gardener... voted to support it.
Notice YOUNG is near Z voting in order ...and he originally VOTED NO because he didn't like the weakening of core family values. THAT IS CONVICTION and PRINCIPLES..
He said he switched his vote to be a part of something larger..
WHICH IS A SELL OUT OF THOSE CONVICTIONS AND CORE PRINCIPLES.
So we have our leaders voting with the HERD MENTALITY and I BET ANOTHER LARGE PIZZA .. YOUNG will receive campaign monies from the gay organization to thank him.
So those who voted for him that had conservative views got screwed over ...
Next up VT is no where near CONSERVATIVE OR RELIGIOUS in nature ...
They don't have JESSICA'S LAW...they want to OK teens sending nude pics of each other ...and they vote against every other conservative measure.
Just as NE does...

Wrong ..the gay community is fighting only in states where IT thinks it may win... You're sitting backwards on a northbound mule and announcing to everyone else that the southern horizon keeps getting bigger. Everywhere, in every state, there are concerned citizens working with and within local political organizations to promote action on the government's unequal reservation to a specific class of people of a legal contract called "marriage". They are raising funds, writing articles, lobbying major party leaders and elected officials, proposing legislation to prohibit the government from discriminating against a class of citizens, and opposing either at the ballot box or through the courts, regulations intended to bolster governmental restriction of this type of legal contract. In the states where their efforts have had more success (the Effect) due to the local population conservatively believing in less government interference in their personal lives (the Cause), we hear about the results. In the states where their efforts haven't been as successful (the Effect) due to the local population liberally believing in greater government intrusion into their personal lives (the Cause), we don't hear much at all. If all you go by is what you hear on the national news, this may give the impression that "the battle" is only being fought in a few states. But that impression is merely based on inadequate knowledge. On the contrary. Wanting to minimize government restrictions on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, is the essence of conservatism. But in order to win votes over the last four decades, the Republican Party sold itself to an extremely liberally-progressive religious movement whose goal is to use the government to make the people of the nation have Right Thought and Right Action. But top-down Cultural Revolutions never work - see Chairman Mao and Stalin. If these christianist politicos truly believe the decay of the nation is a result of the spiritual death of the people, they demonstrate their insanity when they think a legal solution is the answer. If the billions of dollars religious fundamentalists wasted on political campaigns since the mid-70s had actually been invested in their churches, their communities, their missions, their outreach programs, and their evangelizing, they could have won the hearts and minds of the rest of the nation. Sadly, they seem more interested in political control than in true spiritual Revival.
