Should I bother bringing my Magellan GPS unit with me? I've been trying to get points of interest, and simple "city names" like Honolulu or Hilo don't even seem to be in the database.

I would guess this only indicates you don't have the appropriate database loaded into your GPS.
Might check the support pages of the manufacturer's website.

Can you try putting in a waypoint at some coordinates in Honolulu? The pull up the waypoint on a map and see what you get. (Note, I've only used Garmin GPS receivers, so I'm just extrapolating to Magellan....)

I tried entering a zip code (96762) and it suggested other zip codes in California. I think I'll just bring it along and hope it works when I get there.

21*19'07''N 157*55'21''W should be Honolulu Airport. Put that in and see what happens.

Yes they work here but the performance seems to differ between brands and models. I'm thinking that it has to do with how good the data base is.. The factory installed units in both of our cars work fine but they don't get a lot of use.
Some of the problems that I've heard about with some brands revolve around street names in Hawai`i and lag time.

magellen works just well in Honolulu as on the mainland. Just that you have to switch to the Hawaii map, totally different map. My wife's nephew's from Pepperdine (teaches there). He spent 2 weeks in Honolulu staying with my daughter and her husband in Kaneohe (part of Honolulu). He used the Magellen GPS I let my daughter hang on to, since she and her husband travel a lot. He never got lost. He said it worked perfectrly.
