So I've got internet access for the first time in a few days. My hotel room has at least free phone calls with a "resort fee", so I can use dial-up. My hotel room in Waikiki charged a fortune for daily internet access.
And yes Maui Caramacs are about as good as advertised. The Wal-Mart just off of Ala Moana has them for $1.98 for a 6 oz box. I know a place that sells them near home, but it's about $5 a box.
Arrived in Maui today and Haleakala was pretty interesting. I didn't imagine that I'd ever need a jacket in Maui, but I guess anything is possible at 10,000 feet. Didn't see snow though.
Didn't end up seeing UH men's volleyball like I was hoping to do while I was in Honolulu.

Please say that you rented a mask and snorkel and at least looked into the water.

I kept on sucking in seawater and it took me a while to get comfortable. I picked a bad spot though - not really close to any of the reefs and my snorkeling companions couldn't get used to using the equipment and I didn't wander too far. There were a few fish that wandered near the shore. They were a lot easier to see underwater. I'll probably try it again sometime.

I recommend a stop at Menehune Mac (the factory store) on Waiakamilo Rd. when visiting Honolulu (Kalihi district). The ultra dark chocolate macadamia nuts are excellent. And while you are there you can eat lots of free samples.

Big Island today. We're finally driving to Kona. The rental car company said that Saddle Road is OK to drive, but that they don't recommend it.
Went to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. It was raining all day, but that just made the steam in Kileaua Caldera more dramatic. It didn't smell as bad as I've heard it can get. I've smelled worse at Bumpass Hell in Lassen as well as all over Yellowstone. We didn't get close to any lava but we couldn't miss the steam clouds where the lava flowed into the Pacific at the end of Chain of Craters Road. The county closed off the viewing area (outside of the park from Hilo) because of air conditions.

Watch out for the giant cockroaches. They're the Starship Troopers variety.

It rained on and off. Made for some dramatic waterfall activity. Akaka Falls was pretty loud. The rain wasn't so bad that driving was difficult. I've seen harder rain that what I drove through today in Florida, or even Southern California. Of course Southern California is beset with people who have no idea how to drive in the rain. Did you stop at Big Island Candy? Nah. Just the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut visitor center and factory tour. Watch out for the giant cockroaches. They're the Starship Troopers variety. Tried to squish a few (not quite superbug sized) at my condo rental in Kona. We went to try and change rooms (I guess each one is individually owned) and the desk clerk verified that cockroaches are sort of a way of life.

You must try snorkeling again...
Go to Snorkel Bobs in Kona..then just drive south to park ...about 2 miles..marine sanctuary.
walk 20 yds into lagoon with all the other tourist.bend over and see GIANT FISH and sea turtles at your feet.
Remember to have a lava flow at Planet Hollowood and watch VB ..or play yourself after dark.
