Eucher is like hearts and spades.
5 cards dealt to each player. Usually dealt in groups of 2 and 3 at a time. Teams of 2. the 4 remaining cards are placed in the "kitty". Dealer turns the top card up.
Cards are 9,10, J, Q, K, A only
First player to right of dealer decides if they want the up card to be trump or pass. If called, that card goes into the dealers hand and they discard one card of their choice. Team that calls trump must win 3 of 5 hands for a point. Take all 5 hands for 2 pts. If opposing team wins 3 of 5 hands, then they "eucher" the other team for 2 points. If a player goes "alone" their partner can't play. If single player wins all 5, then 4 points. Wins at least 3 of 5 then 1 pt.
Players must follow suit. So if a heart is lead, you must play hearts, unless you have none, then you can play a trump card.
The hard part
If spades is called...here is the order of card value
1. Jack of spades (right bauer) 2. Jack of clubs (left bauer) - this card is the jack of the same color as suit called trump
3. Ace through 9 respectively.
A jack of the suit called is an automatic win of that hand.
Typically a player that has both jacks of the same color will lead both cards simultaneously to draw the rest of the trump out of the opposing hands.
A lay down hand is a trump hand with both jacks, K, Q, A. This hand is laid down for an automatic 2 points (or 4 if playing alone).
I got a little carried away, but I love the game. I'm sure wikpedea has a more complete explanation.
Canadian game, so very popular in upstate NY.

All those trick taking games wish they were Bridge, but fall short.

Always wanted to learn bridge, but nobody around here plays.
How about spite and malice? Anyone ever play that? That's real old school.

Hearts is fun to play with real people, but the computer players in Microsoft Windows Hearts cheat and collude against you.

Pitch is a great game.

For me, it depends on which version (how many points) you are playing. I would agree if you are referring to 4-point or 5-point pitch. On the other hand, 10-point pitch does not get my vote as a "great game".

I don't think the AI players collude against you, actually. They certainly do count cards, but that's not cheating. Real players don't collude because A) It's every player for herself, and B) they can't. Certainly if you're in the lead everyone will try to pile on and pull you down so they can take your place, but the self-interest motive (and the inability to discuss hands and strategy) prevents real players from colluding.
