Must read. Covers why he didn't go after the USA Men's job, to NCAA VB, to who he thinks is the top player in the country (you may be surprised), to .... just read. Be sure to read all three pages: volleyball.about.com/od/ncaa/a/SperawQandA.htm

Oops, sorry! I downloaded and listened to #4 after I listened to #5 live. The brain seems to get mixed up a lot more as the years go by!

Interesting to see that the interviewer was Bev Oden. She writes a blog for volleyball.about.com. You can find the link on the same page as the article...

Kinda debunks the whole theory that people on VT have been putting out there that Speraw is merely marking time at UCI until Al Scates retires.
I think Speraw has the ideal situation at UCI. Beautiful location and campus, and a program that is definitely on the rise in men's college volleyball. Can't remember the last time you could say that about any program. He has a strong commitment from the university, and it's pretty obvious he is at or near the top of the recruiting heap.
What I don't get is Stanford and Kosty - he's got a roster full of top-notch talent. They should be dominating the league but they aren't.

Speraw's got focus and my sense is that he wants to establish his own dynasty and reputation as a "Great Coach." Speraw is an extremely "cerebral" coach and he has the eye for quality, not quantity in recruiting classes. Just look at the All-Americans he has produced so far. They weren't highly recruited (in fact they were ignored)-- Jablonsky, Webber, Thornton, Smith, Pelzel, Wilson, Ammerman, Asuka-- the list goes on. He knows how to bring out the best in his athletes physically, intellectually and mentally-- and he wants to do it so that Irvine is known for Men's Volleyball and has it's place on the vball map.

I remember the '95 MPSF final when UCLA played UH, Speraw played middle opposite Mr. All-American-All-Everything Jeff Nygaard, but it was Speraw that was hitting 1.000 through like 3.5 games. He eventually ended up hitting something ungodly like .800 for the match. Granted, most of UH's attention was keyed on stopping Nygaard/Nihipali/Eric Sullivan/Kevin Wong, but for any middle to hit for that percentage was an amazing feat.
From what I recall, Speraw is an extremely intelligent dude. Graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's in biochemistry. He ain't no slouch, that's for sure.

have to agree w/ grandson in questioning the stanford situation a little - I'd say academics and $s has something to do with it and perhaps an inability to get as deep a practice squad or bench as some of the other schools or be as attractive in #s of players - say lbsu, uci, ucla, uh ... - although some of these places aren't slouch schools or cheap by any means, ... but we are seeing a level difference between the coaching and development with say uci, csun, pepp, byu, ucsd, ... and stanford. So where does stanford they sit vs usc, ucla, uh, ... ? I guess there is a top and bottom to any list.
