FL sanctioned boy's volleyball for the 2002-2003 school year and made it a spring sport, but most schools still don't have teams. Only the large metro areas have them. I'm still hopeful that it will continue to grow.

Florida has 100 high schools playing varsity boys volleyball in a single classification (1A - 6A) that all play for a single state championship. Kind of like the old Indiana basketball system. There are 16 districts, 4 in central Florida (Orlando) and 12 in south Florida (Miami - Ft. Lauderdale coastal areas. There is one team north of Orlando (Jacksonville Bolles) and none on the west coast (Tampa, Naples, Sarasota). Florida is a large state with incredible athletes, probably only second to California in the number who go on to play college and pro sports. If boys volleyball can get established in the other regions than Florida may develop into a great breeding ground for volleyball talent. I know some west coast D1 coaches who've been following the growth closely. Biggest problem Florida has is that football rules the roost and there is a great shortage of quality coaches to grow the sport.

Sorry this may sound really ignorant on my part, but has volleyball only recently becomed sanctioned in the majority of the country? I honestly don't know because Hawai`i has had high school volleyball since I could remember.

It's becoming very popular-so is club ball. Our claim to fame is Tyler Hilderbrandt at Long Beach.

I'm always afraid that boy's volleyball will collapse in Florida unless it can attract enough elite level athletes to promote it. I think it would do better if it were a fall sport - with it in the spring, it conflicts with basketball and baseball too much. I plan to keep trying to get club ball established on the Space Coast. Maybe I'll have a boy's team going by 2007. None of our high schools have teams because of Title 9 and the lack of funds. Our schools are too small to add two more sports - one boys and one girls to offset it. Football is king and they get an incredible amount of money (it is an expensive sport).

In Arizona, our season starts in February-we only overlap basketball by a week (unless your team goes deep into the state playoff). Our club season is split-Sept-Dec, then picks up again in May for those teams going to National Tournaments. It is a relatively cheap sport to start-most of the equipment is already there from the girls. My son is a good basketball player, but his school is VERY GOOD in basketball, so he really doesn't have a chance to play. I'm so glad they had volleyball for him to fall back on after sitting the bench on JV basketball. Of course now, he can't get enough of volleyball. Initially I told him he couldn't get his drivers license if he didn't at least try it one season!

haha...i had 2 reasons for playing volleyball in high school. first...it was too hot to run track in az! second...the coach was hot! haha...i ended up playing 4 years of varsity ball for one of the worst teams in the state but i had a blast! i got a scholarship to a d2 school in the miva and actually played aight for a year (until the program got cut...hint hint). but at least i get a good deal on the rest of my college education. i think more boys should at least give volleyball a try in high school...it could really payoff in the long run. ;D
