Well I'm still holding to my top three: Presho, Reyes and Allen. Allen looks to be out. Reyes recruiting the German National and maybe Metzger at setter are brownie points for Tino. I heard the Metzger had a temper, I don't have problems with that. Costas, Tony and Dejan were head cases. I guess Presho is back in the mix. I really have a problem with a Wade. A womens coach. Has he ever coached a Mens/Boys program. Actually I think the opposite is usually the problem, coaches that have coached men's teams only and then move across to coach women. I personally think that is a bigger transition, and more from the inter-personal perspective than the volleyball perspective. Wade will learn the trends of volleyball on the mens side very quickly and will probably find it much easier to deal with the men (boys). They are generally much simpler creatures.

As mentioned on another thread by brooselee...this maybe the change Arik Metzger needs. To live the loose laidback style. Hawaii in both mens and womens program has a history of helping tempering some peoples behaviors.
Let'e welcome him with open arm because we definitely gonna need his hands in order for us to have any success next season!

So I finally sat down and browsed this kid's recruiting video. Of all the German impact imports we've seen in the US college game, he reminds me the most of former UH and Pepperdine star Andrew Breuer. Same height, same rangy frame. While UH will definitely benefit from his hitting, I think his biggest contribution will be on the block and with his overall game. He's definitely well-rounded. Granted, this is a recruiting video so he's only gonna put into it his best stuff, but the video shows that he can not only hit from all 3 hitting positions in the front row, and the D zone in the backrow, but he can block both on the right and in the middle. His footwork is solid. He also plays decent defense in the right back. For the UH fans looking for the next coming of Yuval Katz, I wouldn't say he's quite that good yet. I think he's more versatile than Theocharidis just based on size alone and the fact that he can play both middle and opposite. Hitting wise, I think he looks alot like Carroll from Pepp, with the exception of not being left handed. He has all the shots. I think if Rawson and Grgas return in the middle for UH, and Hunt and Tuaniga return on the left as well, the "look" of UH's team next year will be much different, as this could be the tallest lineup since probably around the 98-99 era teams that had Stanley/Breuer/Miladinovich/etc.

It looks like UH might get a 6' 9 middle from Europe as well.
In the 2007 FIVB Boys' Youth World Championships Jonas Umlauft was the 7th leading scorer. Murphy Troy ranked 21st.

If that's true, then I look forward to next year's MPSF season. The league tends to get stale fairly easily, with the last good shakeup occurring when Speraw took over at UCI. Now that Speraw is firmly entrenched there and UCI are perrenial contenders, the league was starting to get stale again. With that much size coming in, UH could even out-Dunphy Dunphy at Pepperdine, in terms of putting tall teams on the court.

German Euro imports are usually safe for consumption, as there's been a long line of them in the MPSF going all the way back to the early 90's. CSUN has had alot of them - Axel Hagar, Oliver Heitmann, Eckhard Walter. UH recruited Andrew Brueur a decade ago and he never had questions raised about eligibility. Based on this kid's description and resume, I think he's pretty safe.

Apologize for continuing off post. Looks like Kim Willoughby also just got five years' probation for first-degree assault on a woman outside a nightclub in honolulu 2 years ago: Deputy Prosecutor Sherri Chun said Willoughby and the victim's friend got into a fight at Pipeline Cafe on Dec. 16, 2006. When the victim tried to separate the two, Willoughby pushed her in the face, knocking her down. "Her friend and her tried to leave the nightclub. They were followed by the defendant, and the defendant punched her several times in the face, breaking her nasal bone and eye socket," Chun said. www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090519/NEWS20/905190321Back to topic: If Jonas Umlauft is as good as people are hyping him up to be, then he is a gift from the volleyball gods to the Manoa campus. Now all they gotta do is teach Joshua Walker to pass, Gus Tuaniga to hit, Nejc Zemljak to block and they'll be a solid contender next year.

Costas is also now listed on the BringIt Promotions as an available player. I hope he didn't get laid off from his financial planner job.

Fisher is a great pickup for Wade. I remember when he was at UH - very talented athlete who could play both setter and opposite. Unfortunately, he wasn't gonna get any playing time behind Yuval, so he left for an All-American career at UOP. If he had stayed, he probably could have been the starting setter after Pichel graduated. I thought he was a better setter than Curt Vaughan, or the guy they had setting in 1998, Jorge Alifonso, or even Mason Kuo.

I think Walker may be odd man out next season. He won't improve enough as a passer to take either leftside spot before he graduates, and there's no way he'll beat out Umlauft at Opposite. Tuaniga won't really need to be that big of a hitter for UH next season, I think Umlauft and Hunt will provide enough offense from the pins. Tuaniga could be the ball control player that UH needs to pass well enough to run their offense. Cervantes is back at libero, isn't he?

He didn't start setting in university until he transferred to CSUN, where he started for most of the year (1996-1997). CSUN cut its program that summer for 2 months. Dan left for UOP during the time CSUN was cut. He is still on the CSUN list for Aces in a season.
