For the fourth time since 1991, three Long Beach State players were chosen to the men's volleyball team that will represent the United States in the World University Games, which get under way next week in Izmir, Turkey.
Setter Tyler Hildebrand and outside hitter Robert Tarr, who will be seniors for 49ers' coach Alan Knipe in 2006, and libero Paul Munoz, a senior at Long Beach this past school year, make up a quarter of the squad that opens play against Lebanon on Aug.11.
The team, which is coached by Joe Wortmann (University of Pacific), has a distinct Southern Californian flavor.
Among the other members of the squad are Kris Kraushaar (Irvine and UCLA), Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach and Stanford), Andy Hein (Pepperdine), Nils Nielsen (Fallbrook and Cal State Northridge), Jimmy Pelzel (Lake Forest and UC Irvine) and Shaun Dyk (Cal Baptist).
Knipe and Long Beach teammates Brett Winslow and Matt Lyles were part of the U.S. team that won silver medals in England in the 1991 Games.
Forty-Niners Chris Seiffert, Dave McKienzie, and Jim Polster were gold medal-winners with the U.S. four years ago in China.
And Hildebrand and then-Long Beach teammates David Lee and Scott Touzinsky got bronze medals with the U.S. in Korea two summers ago.
"I'm so happy for Paul (Munoz)," Knipe said Wednesday evening of the player who came to Long Beach as a walk-on from Mater Dei. "He had to work extremely hard just to prove he could play with us, much less on the world level."
Hildebrand is a front-running candidate to be the U.S.'s setter in the 2008 Olympics in China.
