www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/05/22/us/AP-US-Liberty-Democratic-Party.html?_r=1Liberty U. Pulls Plug on Campus Democratic Club By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: May 22, 2009 Filed at 8:25 p.m. ET RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Liberty University has banned its fledgling College Democrats club, saying the group stands against the conservative Christian school's moral principles. Club president Brian Diaz said he was notified by e-mail last week that the club was being banned by the private university in Lynchburg, Va., founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. Vice president of student affairs Mark Hine said in the e-mail to Diaz that the Democratic party violates the school's principles by supporting abortion, socialism and the agenda of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. No other groups were affected. Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. called the club's recognition by the school ''an oversight by an administrator'' who didn't thoroughly consult school policy.

Shocking -- that someone at a private Christian school would have the temerity to start such a liberal organization. Liberty University could never exist in Kalifornia where "moderation" is understood as splitting the difference between extreme liberalism and hyperliberalism.

Liberty is a joke of a university anyway. US News and World Report calls it "less selective" and something like 90% of applicants are accepted

You must have an agile mind and nimble logic to be able to parlay this into a poke at liberals. It's a private school they can do what they want. Students should have thought about what they were getting into before enrolling there. Having said that you will not find a "liberal" institution private or public that would prohibit the presence of The College Republicans on campus.

It hemorrhages irony.

You must have an agile mind and nimble logic to be able to parlay this into a poke at liberals. It's a private school they can do what they want. Not necessarily the case. If they are associated with a church that is granted non-profit status by the IRS, then they are not allowed to endorse political views. Not allowing an organization of Democrats while allowing one for Republicans is about as endorsing you can get. So the question is, what is the entanglement between the school and a church? If there is one, then they will have to either allow the group or give up the non-profit status.
