What a country of doofs we are. Complaining about how horrible times are. We still can afford to spend billions and billions of dollars on our favorite douchebags like Kobe, A-Rod, Clemens, etc,etc,etc. But when it comes to health care and education, we throw nickels around like they're manhole covers. (I think someone once said that about George Halas). Anyway, you doofs continue on with your hero worship of these morons.

I don't follow any celebrity. None of my money goes to them: no NFL, NBA, MLB merchandise, no Keira Knightley lipstick, no Sarah Palin glasses. All of my money goes to the upkeep of my doggies. This week, I will pay $700 for dental work on one of my dogs. He has tartar/plaque and gingivitis. Serious problem. After that, I have to rigorously brush his teeth. Can you imagine? $700 for teeth cleaning for a dog!?!?! That's where my money goes.

I don't even spend what I can afford on them. I do use discretionary money to pay for entertainment. When I do so, I don't begrudge the entertainers for getting compensated for it. But I don't attend these events for their benefit, only mine. |

Just making a statement about the importance our culture places on professional sports. I just feel that the behavior of so many athletes is so disgraceful, and the cost of compensating them so ridiculous, that I just don't find it that "entertaining". I've had several friends that were professional athletes, and they laughingly confirm that the bad behavior we hear about is just the tip of the iceberg. It's each person's choice how they want to spend their discretionary income. It does become problematic when you have people driving around without car insurance, but finding it more important to throw down 100.00 for a ticket to their favorite sporting event. And believe me, in Socal there is a lot of that mentality around. Anyway far be it from me to tell you how to spend your money. I just am not going to spend any more of mine on drugged out, cheating, wife beating, steroided out thugs. Have a nice day, Grumpy Old Blob |

I always get a kick out of athletes' mantra about their high pay, "Hey, I'm just trying to put food on the table for my family." LOL!

I don't know too many people without car insurance, and so I don't have any idea of how they spend their entertainment dollars. I will suggest, albeit baselessly, that they are not the ones who contributing much of the revenues of professional sports teams. I see no reason to think that season ticket holders, for example, have the same percentage of uninsured drivers as do the regular population. Do you ever go to the movies? |

I've got 1/4 season tickets to the Mariners, and full season tickets to the Seattle Repertory Theater. Occasionally I'll go to concerts. Rarely I'll go to movies. I went to more winery parties last year than I went to movies and (non-winery) concerts combined. I pay for cable TV and internet access. I went to about 10 UW volleyball matches last year. And my cars are insured.
Like P-dub said, I pay for entertainment because I find it entertaining and I like to be entertained. I do not care what other people are or are not paying for that same entertainment, nor do I care very much whether the entertainers are "good role models".

Although I will admit that one problem with having so many people wanting sports tickets is that it makes it harder for me to get them and to get good seats. So I would be better off if fewer people were attending.
BTW, Mike, I am going to be in Seattle in July. Got an extra Mariners ticket for Sunday July 12th? Want some company? The wife will be busy conferencing, and I thought it would be fun for the baby and me to head to a ballgame. I was going to just get a single, but hey, if I can get season ticket holder seats, it's that much better.

But if I know that the film is starring a pedophile, I'm certainly not gonna be buyin a ticket to that particular show. There are enough choices out there that I can pick and choose. (my brothers went to school with Charlie Sheen, Emelio Estevez, and Sean Penn, so I'm well versed in the a$$clown aspect of Hollywood) LOL. |
