so the USA Men are finally going back to compete in the WL, cool. when was the last time they played WL? www.fivb.org/EN/Infomedia/PressRelease.asp?No=5567The 2006 Volleyball World League reaches new heights! Lausanne Switzerland, 8 September 2005.- A historical decision was taken by the Volleyball World League Council today in Lausanne, with the Prize Money reaching 20 million USD for the first time ever and thus setting an unprecedented level for a global team sport event. Out of these 20 million USD, two million USD will fund a special Bonus Pool in order to reward the participating National Federations. The FIVB, largest sport organization in the world selected among 18 candidates the following 16 countries that were bidding for one of the vacancies in this prestigious event: BRAZIL, SERBIA & MONTENEGRO, POLAND and CUBA the four winners of the 2005 World League final in Belgrade, UNITED STATES and RUSSIA, coming back after several years of absence due to an internal reorganization, FRANCE, ITALY, PORTUGAL, GREECE and BULGARIA are the other European powers in the League that will face JAPAN, KOREA and CHINA from Asia plus ARGENTINA from America and EGYPT the first team ever from Africa. The incorporation of Egypt makes the World League the first sport event being played in the 5 five continents.

That is great news. I like what Hugh Mc-however-you-spell-his-last-name is doing with the USA Men. They are flying under the radar for now, but based on this year's performances alone, there's a whole lot of improvement going on. I wonder how much of that is attributed to the change in coaching and coaching personality.
I wonder if the FIVB has relaxed the financial commitments that were tied into WL participation. That was the major sticking point for USAV not participating, and I'm sure financially strapped federations like Russia and Cuba were in the same boat. Looks like all three are back in the competition now, which is a good thing.

One more thing - I'm looking forward to seeing some match dates here in the U.S.

That would be great if we could get some matches!!
I met Hugh McCutcheon at a USAV CAP training class last January - he was part of the Cadre - and he seemed very knowledgable (Duh!) and very nice.
I think that he is a great assett to the USA Men's team and USA Volleyball. With our addition to the WL, that can only help our players gain more experience. If they can keep a group playing and training together, rather than going off to play elsewhere, that has to be good for the programs future.

It is of my opinion that USA volleyball may have missed the boat on the selection of their Men's Coach. kudos to Hugh for getting the job and working his way up the pipeline but I wonder if they should have gone after Stork earlier and harder. While Stork may not be the overall organiztion man that Hugh is he has a better unerstanding of the Players game of the day, he has an intimate knowledge of the international level required and he can bring the element of technical adjustments and training that Im not convinced Hugh has. God knows we have a lot of technical Retraining of our Men's team to do.
It is just an opinion....truly I will the best to this program.

I was thinking about Stork the other day! A few of us were talking about how there are so few head coaching positions for high level men's volleyball - these great coaches have to be assistants forever or switch to coaching women's teams.
Did they not ask him or did he not want it? He has a pretty good set up at CSUN.

UNITED STATES and RUSSIA, coming back after several years of absence due to an internal reorganization, Internal reorganization? I love the way Acosta can spin it.....How about traveling 27,385 miles to play 6 matches against good competition...but very costly to all involved. I wonder if they laxed their live TV requirement? OT, I see the Champions Cup in Japan has one Wildcard spot available. Makes it much easier to bribe The Rueben over in Le Suisse?

Did they not ask him or did he not want it? He has a pretty good set up at CSUN. This is just a guess, but I think Stork is happy where he's at now. I know he has kids and they are around the ages where I think Stork probably values the stability of the CSUN job over the instability of the USA Men's job. Also, given USAV's financial state, I doubt they could make an attractive enough offer to make it feasible for Stork to make the move to C. Springs.

I tend to agree with you on that one. When he took the CSUN job, there was some surprise, but then it was pointed out that he has a nice house near there and has a young family, so it made a lot of sense.
There is still some talk about USAV moving to Anaheim this October. October is almost here, so I wonder if it is goin to happen or not. Has anyone heard anything?
