Olympic volleyball star dies in car accident Associated Press Sports Updated: 12:56 p.m. ET Sept. 16, 2005
KLAGENFURT, Austria (AP) - Polish Olympic volleyball star Arkadiusz Golas was killed Friday when his car hit a highway barrier.
The 24-year-old player sustained fatal head injuries, and his body had to be extricated from the car by firefighters. His wife survived the accident after losing control while driving near Griffen, 25 miles from Klagenfurt, police said.
"We have no idea yet why the car crashed into the wall,'' police inspector Karl Pachoinig told The Associated Press. "It pulled to the right, hit the guardrail and was catapulted.''
Golas played for the Italian club Lube Banca Macerata, which won the Volleyball Champions League in 2002. He played for Poland at the Athens Olympics. In 2005, he led Poland to the quarterfinals of the European championships.

Dang. That sucks. I think something similar happened to former Soviet/CIS/Russian star Alexander Kutznezov back in the mid-90's.
