It looks like Cala will be passing the ACT before the end of the semester and will hopefully start playing this year. Another interesting fact is that he's only 20 years old right now. I thought he was older.

He was a member of the Cuban National Team and defected during a trip to Puerto Rico. First he went to UCLA, but they didn't think that he would pass his ACT so he came to BYU.
I don't find it stupid that someone from Cuba wanted to come to the U.S. to find a better life. If he wants to play volleyball while he's at it then why not?

He didn't just fail it again. Who are your sources anyway?
I know becuase I am friends with one of the guys who was tutouring him. He doesn't anymore, but he still keeps in close contact with him. I'm also close with some of the other international players who are going to be trying out, but are still in the process of passing their ESL and ACT exams.

NCAA should have a rule that you MUST be an American citizen to play. That would stop the going abroad looking for players.

Well that's a bit extreme Junta, but there are rules in place to limit the umm special considerations that might be provided to prospective recruits.
I'm not accusing anyone of anything mind you but I have to say I am very curious about some details of Cala's situation.
Is he enrolled at BYU? Where is he living? How is he getting tutored? Who is paying for all this?

How about 2 per team maximum? Would that be a reasonable compromise?
One problem (among many) with foreign players is they usually require more money than most American volleyball players get, further reducing the money available to American players.

I have seen the opposite. The foreign players have parents who are doctors, dentist, and lawyers and take little or no money. "Just get me into school"

Gawd, it amazes me the sheer number of times the same, whiney-ass argument comes up on this board. Get over it. It really doesn't matter since it won't change anything anyway. What really needs to change is the number of scholarships that football gets. Reduce that to something reasonable and more scholarships can go to other men's sports and perhaps some schools could move their Club teams to Varsity level. Just a thought.
