I would be disappointed if Illinois doesn't tear it up with the way the stars are aligned for them this year. Similar to MU last year with more firepower. They got a Fab 50 lefty opp., a 6'5 setter, a 6'5 starting middle from Adversity 18-1, and a transfer from Pacific to complement a lineup where 1 of 4 All-Americans graduated. They will be a fun team to watch. I hadn't heard about Illinois adding a good middle. That's where they really lost the most to graduation, as I recall their roster from last year. But I have heard that the best player from Augustana's club team (#2 at National D II level last spring) also transferred to Illinois this year. ... So they had a tall, freshman setter last year, they add a 6'5" setter, and they add Burchett (right?), a four-year starting setter from the two-time defending state champs?!? Wow. Marquette, Oshkosh, and Illinois have to be the teams to beat in the midwest. All top three at nationals last year and they all return most of their talent, or add even more to it.

I thought MSU won the Big 10 last year... what's all this talk about Illinois... and speaking of transfers from Pacific, MSU picked up 2 former tigers in Gawlik and Larsen for the upcoming club season. They also return the best defender in the Big 10 and the Big Ten MVP...

MSU did win the big 10 tourney last year, and MSU is a good team. Their setter, Domingo, and their Opp. Travis, are their best players in my mind. But the reason Illinois is being hyped is because they got 3rd at Nationals, which is a much bigger scope than a single conference. They also reload with top prep players, and had 4 All-Americans, 3 of which are back.

From what I knew, MSU (like Purdue and Ohio State) lost key players to graduation. But if they're picking up a couple of guys via grad school, that could certainly change things. That's why we're talking here ...to see what's what as the fall tourneys approach in a couple of weeks.
By the way, what are some dates for midwest tournaments (since that's where most of this talking is focused)? Indiana on 10/15? NIU on 11/5?

Whatup everyone! Anyone know of a setter or is interested in setting for a very solid mens team for adult nationals . Got a really talented group of players (one being the 2005 NIRSA lebro of the year) that is looking for a setter. Is this the WVC team Rocky was talkin about this summer Chris? What's the lineup so far?

So far the team is myself, I thought you, rocky, jon lewicki, two players from a division three team and I a guy from a milwaukee usav team. All we truly need is a setter. Are you still in?

Teams that look good in the preseason for the Midwest: Oshkosh: lose very little from last year, and seem to be in the habit of reloading rather than rebuilding Illinois: same deal as Oshkosh...only question is whether they will underachieve until Nationals comes along again Those are the only "locks" to be at the top from what I know. Other teams that seem in the race for MIVAs... MSU (according to what people put on here) Dayton...have been good past couple of years in the less-than-dominant Ohio conference Marquette, still have 4 starters (including Libero) back from last year Lakeland...I throw them in because Chad finds a way for players to improve (even though they all seem to dislike him) That's all I know enough about to say As for other regions, Penn St always seems to come out of the East coast on top, Texas A&M has topped their conference for awhile now, can't see anything big changing with Colorado/Arizona being at the top of the Mountain region or whatever it's called, and it'll be interesting to see what happens in California with UCLA having it's 2nd year of club ball and something about Stanford starting a club? Got a long road ahead no matter how you look at it.
Gornick, Lewin...see you guys at the Marquette tournament. I'll be playing with the alumni, so look for me to not have a shoulder by the end of the day.

It's going to be interesting to see if the Midwest dominance that was shown at KC last year was a fluke or if it can be maintained in SLC. I'm sure that Illinois, MSU, Marquette, Oshkosh, Lakeland are still going to be strong, but I want to see if the second tier teams in MIVA are going to step up. Dayton, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Illinois State all had a few stretches last year. I wonder if they're going to step up or if it was kind of a last stand for some of their seniors.

here's the scoop out west. UCLA is a tough team who barely lost to a very good Holy Names University (NAIA) team in the Great Western Shootout Semis. Fresno St. added a big 6'7" middle. Santa Clara has four freshman, two of which see court time at middle and opposite. Berkeley is going to get better. They added a middle transfer from UCI a freshman setter and opposite who dominate the court. Sac St. is strong but small. San Jose St. has a strong team also. The whole NCCVL is level at the top. I don't know how the midwest and east teams look, but it could be evenly matched simply due to the freshman influence on the west coast.

Prediction time: Since most are from Midwest, what are the top 5 teams out of the midwest, top players, and best coach As far as the top 5 teams outta the Midwest goes: 1. Oshkosh (until proven otherwise) 2. Illinois 3. Lakeland 4. Michigan State 5. Marquette The top players from each team would include: Oshkosh- an all-around solid team, no one stands out over the next one Illinois- The big middle and the Opposite(Rob i think ?) Lakeland- Outside(Martin) Mich. State- The grad. student Marquette- Lizka and Biros Best Coach: Definately, without question........is Chad Schrieber from Lakeland!!!!! ( yea effing right!!!!!)

I would put Lakeland at number 2 over Illinois right now. Their finishes at Indiana and Iowa and deserving of that. Otherwise I would agree.
I would say JT and Semrad (who is beginning to be known only as "Ogre" by some teams) stand out on Oshkosh. Kevin is the opp. on Illinois, Rob is one of the outsides.
Do the players on Lakeland even like their coach? It's pretty obvious many guys don't, but I'm wondering if his players can stand him.
