According to the Fullerton website the student section rushed the floor after the match. When was the last time you saw that happen at a women's volleyball match?

I was at the game. UCLA passed poorly and struggled terminating from the outside. They couldn't sync up the block either. CSUF tooled off, over, around, and through the block time and time again. CSUF played out of their minds. Almost all of the long rallies went their way. They came from behind to win in the fifth. The match ended on an overpass put straight down. About the games where UCLA "dominated," I wouldn't go that far. CSUF missed a lot, and I mean A LOT of serves. They took themselves out of those games. This just wasn't UCLA's night. From the looks of Dicey and Kaitlin's stats, you're so very right about UCLA outsides not being able to terminate. Gil lead UCLA in kills tonight with 11. Team high of 11 kills in a five game match? Just not enough offense from the Bruins! Congrats to Fullerton's Saddler (think that's her name) for her 20 kills! She had more kills that Dicey and Kaitlin combined!

I'm wondering if part of the reason we seem to be seeing more upsets, is a result of the change last year to 25 point sets even though I don't think it was as evident last year - or at least I didn't notice it.
In this match, CSF only scored about 48.5% of the points, to UCLA's 51.5%. In longer matches, it would seem that the team scoring a higher percentage of the points would win more of the matches. Same thing in the Oregon-Minnesota match last night with the Oregon-Minnesota ratio at about 49%-51%.
Has anyone attempted to study/analysis whether there are more matches where the winner has less than 50% of the points versus during the 30 point era?
This is an interesting side effect for volleyball. Can you imagine playing a game of basketball where the first team to win 3 "quarters" won the game?

According to the Fullerton website the student section rushed the floor after the match. When was the last time you saw that happen at a women's volleyball match? When Wisconsin swept PSU in October, 2006. (Might have been PSU's last time swept) Speaking of which, CSF beat UW earlier this year. Maybe it wasn't as bad a loss as we thought. There are a few teams that I've watched that were always late-surging winners that I think have been affected by the 25-pt game.

Don't use the scoring system as an excuse. These things happen. Congrats Fullerton.

From what I have been told by those in attendance, Fullerton played out of their minds and UCLA probably took this match and just figured that they could "mail in" a victory.....Fullerton banged away on their serves, ala the men's game, and although they had something like 17 service errors their serving kept UCLA's passing off balance all evening......I would bet big bucks that UCLA won't take Long Beach nearly as lightly as they did Fullerton last night.....UCLA is a very good team, tall, talented, but like just about everyone(you listening Nebraska?) not invincible! Long Beach will have to play out of their minds to beat UCLA tonight.....

Baylor swept Fullerton last week. Crazy how a team can be so up and down.

wtf?? The upsets this season are mind-boggling. I like these upsets by schools that shouldn't be defeating perennials powerhouses. This loss ought to haunt them in the end should UCLA make the NCAA tournament, right? On the other hand if CSF has a great conference season and wins the Big West(relax, I'm just speaking hypothetically) this year it'll only be a plus for them in the NCAA tournament committee, right? Belated congrats to a fellow Big West school I like...way to go Titans and big congrats to Coach Zimmerman. Enjoy the victory but when it comes time to play against CSUN...well be ready for defeat. Anywaaaay - good job.

Um, if you win your conference, you get an NCAA automatic bid.....at least last time I checked

I was at the match last night... Fullerton's Erin Saddler pounded through flimsy UCLA blocks. She used to play middle, but moving her to the outside has brought out the super-athlete. UCLA's 6'6" Amanda Gil was impressive at middle, but when she was libero'd out Fullerton would capitalize and load on the points. Torrie Brown put up a fierce right side block and sent hard angle darts to the floor. Erin Saddler played all around, and UCLA served her time and time again, but her passes were accurate enough for adept setter Andrea Ragan to translate into whackable ammunition. Ashley Collier defended very well in the back row. It was GREAT fun to watch. UCLA was coming off their impressive win over Nebraska -daughter Lauren Cook setting against Dad John Cook's team- and we thought maybe Fullerton just caught UCLA by surprise in winning the first game. But Fullerton stayed focused and intense the entire match, whereas the mighty UCLA seemed at times to become preoccupied about reputation damage, moping back to their positions after lost points and losing composure. UCLA's new setter Lauren Cook has a lot of pressure on her -and as a freshman at that. I don't know enough about vb to judge her setting... she looked like a fantastic player to me. Thank you everybody for an unforgettable match! -Chickenwing Queen
