We all have had our share of bad referees. Please do share any venting or stories concerning bad officiating which is still lodged in your minds. (ex. phantom net on your daughter who is 5 feet away from the net during state championships at match point, a double-hit called on a cleanly bumped ball, etc.) If you want to nominate your district/region/state for having the worst referees please share! :-D Referee board politic venting also allowed here.

I wasn't there, but someone told me about 1996 Cal at Stanford, which went five games. Apparently Cal had match point, thought that they had won with a touch off the block, and were celebrating. The Stanford players started getting in line to shake hands. Apparently neither line judge called the touch and the up ref didn't call a touch, so play went on. I've spoken to and shared messages with several people who attended that match (Gorf before his passing said he was there) who said that there was a clear as day directional change off of Stanford's block before it went out. Addendum: I tracked down a few messages on the subject, archived from rec.sport.volleyball on Google Groups. It was a tool by Cal's Brook Coulter up 15-14 in game 5 off of Kristin Folkl's elbow. Quite a few people saw the touch including several Stanford fans. One claim is that Folkl even admitted that it went off of her. groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.volleyball/browse_thread/thread/f2a4d8584f08c98d#groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.volleyball/browse_thread/thread/bf472e6689fee771#

When making your nomination please include your officiating experience.

no need to mention experience, if you cannot control the match you are a terrible referee.
I nominate the line judges of the Serbian Volleyball Federation at this years World League Finals!
who needs to have experience to view this as bad officiating?

This last weekend during my daughter's match the opposing team's RS fell into the net, grabbed hold of the net but had it slip through her fingers, then fell onto our side hitting our LOH in the knee, knocking her down and landing on her (on our side of the net). We lost the point when my daughter made the mistake of doing a bump set without checking first to make sure that her LOH was not sprawled on the ground writhing in pain.
The down ref was three feet away and never said anything...
I also remember a few years ago when Courtney Thompson punched the ball over the net with one closed fist and got called for a double.

who needs to have experience to view this as bad officiating? Holy crap that's bad. We're talking balls landing right on the line or well in. Maybe they've been practicing that motion with the flag and it's just muscle memory. I didn't even get that far in earlier before I posted. Then I noticed that touch that wasn't called as the blocked ball rolled down the Serb player and out.

he Serbian udges should be vying for jungle league officiating opportunities. Ya'know where the hitter grabs the net with the left to pull it down a little as you're swinging with the right, and nobody minds....

So, what is worse, a "phantom" call or a missed no call?

I'm sorry but this is one of my biggest pet peeves about this sport, there is plenty people that complain and put refs down, but refs never get thanked or appreciated for what they do... Without refs our kids wouldn't even be playing...and if you've never been a ref or have experience being a ref then I don't think you should be talking down about bad officiating... Reffing isn't easy...if you think you can do a better job then why don't you apply to be a ref...refs are human jus like everyone else and they make mistakes...being a ref takes so much and you need to pay attention to so much things and it's human to miss things once in a while even obvious calls because maybe the ref was watching something else at that time... When it comes to officials, the fans, coaches, players jus need to take it easy and relax...jus enjoy the game...because i for one have never blamed a ref for the outcome of a match, because if your team took care of the ball on their side of the net and then there should be no reason the ref could decide the outcome of the game...because I think it's pretty sad if you have to blame the ref for the outcome of a game because there should be no reason a ref should be able to decide the outcome of a game if your team jus played how they are suppose to play and not worry about the refs and let the refs influence them and get into their heads! All I have to say is stop complaining and jus play the game!

I get your point kolohekeiki, but its so obvious when a referee just wants to get the game over with. From dinosaurs that miss everything to those who call everything.. you should know, heck you live in hawai'i. People say we should be grateful for the handful of referees in hawai'i, but you always see the same ones, it makes me question their effort on recruiting new officials. has it come to a point where they are discouraging newbies to come in or yet excel? we have seen the same ones for the past two decades... the only difference is that they are getting fatter.... Are they hogging all the matches to themselves? Consistency is a huge factor in officiating...Granted referees make errors, but to consistently make errors? I dont think being consistant in that is good.

I dont think being consistant in that is good. Yes I'm not saying that Hawai`i has the best officials, but we don't have the worse officials either... And yes we do always see the same ones, but have you ever tried to think that maybe they have a hard time getting new officials because nobody wants to do it, because the way officials are treated and the way they are disrespected during games? Because heck I've been asked if I wanted to officiate games, but I said no because of the way officials are treated, I'm not blind or deaf, I'm a coach and I can see and hear all the stuff that other coaches, players and fans are yelling at the officials. And do I want to put myself in that position to be disrespected...heck no! So I have a feelin that's probably why we are seeing the same refs over and over again because nobody wants to do the job! So all I can say is jus respect the officials because they are during the best they can and they are not there to purposely juice a game like how plenty coaches, players and fans think!

I'd have to nominate last year's crew for the NCAA women's championship match. Totally bungled up the score and award the point to the wrong side after Nicole Fawcett scored off the touch.
R1, R2, line judges, plus 3 additional officials at the scorer's table. All supposedly hand-picked for the match. And NONE of them can keep the correct score. Lame.
But...ahh...talking about bad referees is so boring. How about something more interesting? Let's talk about NAUGHTY refereeing. Share some stories about your favorite NAUGHTY ref. Haha.

Ok, here's my feelings. I ref, and I make sure I thank a official for a good or great match.
But too many refs in our sport think the game is about them.....

This story is a little different: I'm usually a loud obnoxious student at volleyball matches. I'll heckle the other team's coaches and players and also, when given a prime opportunity, I'll heckle officials for a bad call. Last spring we had a tournament with a bunch of different Florida teams. Because it was a spring match and a laid back atmosphere, I spent the majority of the matches talking to other fans instead of watching the match and cheering. Another fan by me didn't agree with a call and simply said "bad call ref! how'd you get this job?" The official then switched with one from the other court and the new one cam over to ME and my friends (not the fan who had made the comment) and told us that if we said one more word we would be forced to leave.
Now, that's bad officiating.
