marv dunphy voted hawaii #1, as he has done every week so far.

the gap in points between hawaii and pepperdine is smaller (14 pts), but i thought hawaii would garner more first-place votes (at least 3 or 4). the two matches between hawaii and pepperdine were so close, i thought coaches would give hawaii more #1 votes.

what do ya'll think?

Hawaii did gain points compared to last week. Hawaii got one first place vote worth 15 points. If the other 15 coaches all voted Hawaii as the second place, they would have gotten a 210 points (15 X 14). Add that to the 15 points for the first place vote and you end up with 225 points. Hawaii actually totalled 222 points, so most of the voters are putting Hawaii at number 2.

As far as Lewis, I dont think most voters took that into consideration this week. Since the votes need to be in by Tuesday morning (or something around there), some might have sent in their votes before the USC match. After all, who would have thought that USC would beat #4 Lewis? No one on this board did; not even VBCrusin.

I think part of the reason is that the first match is usually more important than the second. Logically, I would think the team that wins the first match would usually be the better team. Splits are commonplace in the MPSF but the losing team fights for their life, not wanting to get swept.

In response to why Lewis had not fallen further, the poll is for results from Monday through Sunday. In this case, results for the Lewis-USC match would not have been affected.
