Too bad Rooneey can't get it over their block!! He has to be feasting in Korea if that is a typical block being put up. OUCH!! These guys are professionals. They know how to play the game at a different level. Timing is paramount in the international game when it comes to every thing they do, including block. Try watching a game, if you can before you comment on height, and blocking ability. You'd be surprized just how high some of these guys jump. Plus you'll definately be shocked at how tall Koreans get. Koreans are actually some of the tallest Asians you will ever meet. The average height of korean men is about 5'10" to 6'. The same as it is here in teh USA. I have played many a tournament with Korean guys taller than me, and I'm 6'2".

Actually, the foreign players you see on the AVP are all under the "grandfather clause" which allows foreign players, who have played on the AVP before a certain year, might be like 2000 or 2001. No NEW foreign players are allowed to play on the AVP as far as i know. I think there were some Chinese teams playing last year but it was part of a deal the avp had with the Chinese govt....someone correct me if i'm wrong about that

I'm sure glad we have an authority on everything volleyball in the form of NYCT coach!! I made a casual comment about a photo. From that photo Rooney is completely over a block that can't even get their elbows over the net when Rooney is in full extension over the net!! I have seen plenty of VB, and completely understand the nuances the international game. So are you saying you would rather have a player that was the same height as that block swinging for your team? Or are like me and would rather take your chances with an athlete like Rooney who is taller and obviously blessed with a much better vertical? Taller + vertical? I'll take my chances with the likes of Rooney over the defensive minded Asian players all day long! But I would like to thank you for your clarification of avg. heights around the world, while not forgetting to give us your height in order to validate your whole argument!!

Doesn't this clause have to do with the FIVB league.

I thought it was something like that. Doesn't this clause have to do with the FIVB league. I don't believe so. The FIVB is a international federation so all foreigners are permitted to play.

I know that the FIVB is international players. I was asking if the clause for the AVP was made because the FIVB allows international players.

btw, I'm an ethnically Korean, American and I stand over 6'3" tall. The average height of the Koreans that I saw on the train (and I rode the train in Seoul a lot) was not 5'10-6'. It was more likely to see men about the same height or shorter than my sister (who was travelling with me and stands over 5'8") than to see them much taller. [Please remember that I am just stating what I saw and observed. I am not making blanket truth statement that should go down as law.]
But the Koreans that play in the volleyball league are taller and know how to play. They'll adjust accordingly. But what I do know is that volleyball, just as in the states is a dying sport in Korea, it is not as watched and is quickly losing sponsership. There are only six men's and 5 women's team left. With the ever popular football (soccer to the Americans, like me) and baseball and the surgence of men's and women's basketball, volleyball is having a hard time.
