Dunphy doesn't like playing Midwest or East Coast teams. That is why nobody is playing Pepperdine. Dunphy doesn't feel they have anything to gain by playing those teams. If they win, "they are suppose to win", if they lose, "they are screwed out of an 'at large' bid". That is how he feels, and rarely, RARELY plays Midwest or East coast teams when those teams come out here on their Spring Break trips.

I've heard that some MPSF coaches who want to see the sport grow, use these matches as their way of helping the midwest and Eastern teams to get notoriety and respect, to help their programs in the eyes of their administration and fans. It does serve that worthy purpose. There is risk in scheduling them. Besides having nothing to gain, (as was said above), UCLA has four matches this week, and two of them are in Hawaii. Scheduling Loyola and Lewis early in this week doesn't exactly rest a team before a long flight and two competititve matches against a tough opponent like Hawaii. But some coaches see a value to the sport to play MW/E team. I also know that some MPSF coaches use the same philosophy when it comes to living with two MW/E teams for the final four. Last year was a good example where a good 6 teams in the MPSF deserved to be in the FF ahead of PSU and OSU, but if MW/E teams are locked out of the FF their administrations won't justify the programs. Think about it. I'm glad there's talk about going to an 8 team tourney, as long as the teams are seeded properly so the real FF teams do make it to the end.
As far as Loyola goes, in my humble opinion they're the best looking mid-west team I've personally seen play in the last three years, at least the way they played last night. I felt they were stronger that last year's PSU team that I saw play twice. Their defense really stood out, at least as good as UCI's, and they had some legitimate hitters. I'm willing to give them some credit for their play. Maybe they stepped up being in Pauley Pavilion. You could tell they were really fired up emotionally at the beginning of the match.

Lewis should be happy taking UCLA to five, that is very hard to do in Pauley Pavilion.

DUNPHY AND COMPANY SHOULD BE GLAD SOME TEAMS PLAY THEM . EASY TO SCOUT BEFORE RECEIVING TAPES FOR THE FINAL FOUR . I AGREE WITH HIS THINKING . ONLY CERTAIN YEARS ARE THE TEAMS FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MISSISSIPPI WORTHY OF PLAYING THEM AND THE MPSF TEAMS ARE USUALLY 8 OF THE TOP TEN TEAMS ANYWAY .
